:baby: George is popular with the betting fraternity. David was the name of the King who abdicated to marry Mrs Simpson.......so maybe not. Henry is the name of his Uncle Harry. At least he's healthy and much loved so who minds what they name him. We've never had so many Kings in waiting (3 at the last count).

I've heard that George was a possible favorite name choice also. I know the betting pools were favoring Alexandra if it had been a girl, maybe they'll consider Alexander? I love that name. Also Richard - there's a nice name with royal precedence. (Not to mention my DH's name, he thinks he's a king too!) I'm pretty sure you will not see the names Edward, David, John or Stephen being considered due to bad historical memories.

I thought there were some nicer choices than George :( Is it definitely all their choice or is there some input from others?
Im glad to see one of Williams names (louis) in there though! I thought he would have had Philip or Charles somewhere as William and Harry have one and the other.
Who knows how they come to decide! lol

I expect there is pressure if not outright demand over the naming. The others not in line can be a bit more informal like Zara and Beatrice etc. but a future king, has only a very narrow band of first names available.

Shame, Id have like to see a King Tyler, If only to annoy Katie Hopkins...

Well other people, friends and family, have given their babies names I didn't care for. Still think Arthur would have been so cool, but perhaps a bit high in expectations for a teeny babe. Question now is what will his, or will he, have a nickname? Whatever. Welcome to baby Prince George. :king:

The name annoyes me. It is as if they haven't actually done some research. Prince George is a city in Northern British Columbia Canada and it isn't that nice of a place. It is very sketchy full of drugs and crime. It was Canada's #1 crime town for a while. Not to mention the horrible pulp smell that you can smell when the wind is blowing the right way. It really isn't that nice of a place and now every time I hear Prince George I will associate it with that city, as will many people who have been there.

Yes, but George has a lot of good history and honour too - it's the Queen's father's chosen name as a king to start with, so choosing George honours the Queen.

It will make him a 7th (as there have been 6 King George's) which is considered a regal and lucky number in many cultures and places.

And St George is the Patron Saint of England ... so it's good in Godly circles too.

as I lived in PG, I can attest to the nastyness of it. and it was the first thing I thought of when I read Prince George of Cambridge. oh well, when he is King George VII it will have a much nicer ring to it

I'm surprised they haven't put something in there with a welsh connection considering that Will is Prince of Wales, and currently stationed in the north of the country.

I'm not sure it has been mentioned here but the parents don't exactly get to pick the name. Their choose a name and then it has to be run past the queen for her to OK it. She has been known to say no as well. On the news they said apparently someone in family wanted to call as son Theodore and she said no way

I've got to say I really like the final choice though- I think it fits well

Thats why I thought they would throw in an Andrew into the name mix.. since they met at St. Andrews.
Who knows- maybe they'll use it with the next one.
Not my baby- not my decision.. and  they never called for my opinion.

Charles is the Prince of Wales. It's a title reserved for the Heir Apparent. When he becomes King, I believe he could invest William with the title.

Personally, I don't particularly like George as a name in itself, but I think it is an excellent choice for the new Prince. The Queen's father's name was Albert Frederick Arthur George, but he was known as King George VI. He had a lot of obstacles to overcome during his lifetime. He was thrust into becoming King when his brother abdicated, a role he didn't want, and he had to overcome a stutter. He also reigned during the difficult years of the Second World War.
I like to think the baby is named after him.

and when the time comes when the prince is crowned king, if he doesnt like George he can choose alexander of louis if he wants??
We were talking about this  I quite fancy king louis! maybe only because i love the jungle book
on a serious note I think it was nice that they honored the queens father. :)

It upsets me that I dont know a lot about the kings and queens!
This is where the scottish education system is a bit ignorant in history we were only taught about things from the first and second world wars and the British government!

Ill need to do some reading myself :)

@JA Fan b- yeah there is that (I've always thought of him as prince of wales - misthinking on my part). I think they use the term William Wales in the RAF to define him

@millymolly. Yeah I know its terrible! we do a lot of medieval history but more modern history (first world war onwards) and regal history is just flat out not taught. We also do a fair bit of european/foreign history. I would love to do more about our own country and history

Sorry ladies, I have to step in to support the City of Prince George. Having travelled extensively for work in BC, PG is much like many communities throughout the world. None worse than any other. They are resource based (lumber) and as such can have economic down turns that can be apparent and bring along associated troubles. They are a northern town and it brings the reality of our Canadian winters to it and the summers are a time of heat and bugs. Most communities in the world have sketchy areas and the troubles you associate with PG.
Most of all, PG is a town filled with hard working, generous people who will give you the shirt of their back if you need it.
I think our future king would do well if he exhibits the kindness and hard working spirit that I have experienced in my visits to their community.

Yes, I think he can choose which name to use.

This is where the scottish education system is a bit ignorant in history we were only taught about things from the first and second world wars and the British government!
When I was in school, in England, it was only about 20+ years after WW2 ended so apparently it was considered too recent to teach us about it. I left school completely ignorant of this important time in our history. Come to think of it, we weren't even taught about the First World War either!
Instead, we were taught about the Norman Conquest of 1066 or the Industrial Revolution. We learned about those events in great detail! Good things to know, to be sure, but I think teaching us about the recent wars would have been more valuable.
As for the Kings and Queens of England, I mostly remember having the dates of their births, how long they reigned and what year they died drummed into my head!
Any significant events that occurred during their lifetimes were skimmed over unfortunately. Except for the demise of King Harold in the Battle of Hastings because that was during the Norman Conquest!
I guess I didn't have history teachers with some imagination who could bring these Monarchs back to life in the classroom. That would have been fantastic!
