Just Cross Stitch Halloween SAL

Post by calico »

I thought I would start this SAL for anyone stitching Halloween designs from Just Cross Stich Halloween issue 2013... ( or any Halloween projects you want to share)!

I started working on Owl-O-Ween on page 71 yesterday :applesauce: it calls for hand over dyed floss from Weeks Dye Works which is lovely, but because I already had the DMC equivelants and black Jobelan on hand I decided to just use those.

I have to say, after working on 14 count ivory Aida ( Baby Blue Jays) it took a bit of adjusting going to 1 over 1 on 28 ct black Jobelan  had to get out the lighted magnifier and really ease up on the tension. I'm on a roll now and should finish it up in a day or two!

:applesauce: Great idea. I can watch all the fun in one place. I don't have any Halloween projects yet, but I still have last year's L*K* Halloween SAL. Might have to start that one. In the meantime can't wait to see all the black cats, witches, ghosts and goblins and owls that y'all are going to stitch!

Well, it's not really a Halloween pattern but it's from the 2011 JCS Halloween issue. It's called Autumn Harvest. The pattern called for Needlepoint Inc silk & Thread Gatherer Silk threads but has DMC conversions...which sometimes aren't the best, so I changed some colors. It also called for PTP hand-dyed 32 ct linen in a blue shade but I used cream 16 ct aida, stitching 2 over 1.

I hurried to stitch this up for a friend who's moving out of town. We've only known each other 2 years but such is the way of military families. Right as you get really comfortable someplace & have great friends, one of you has to move.

Now that this is done, I'll go back to my Joan Elliott "trick or treat" design that I started a couple of weeks ago. I have a separate SAL post for that piece.

ETA: Those golden yellow stalks are supposed to be corn but I think they look more like wheat.

Love to follow this thread to see your lovely work.
Here in Europe, Halloween isn't celebrated like it is across the ocean  So I will probably not stich a Halloween pattern in my life....

While Halloween designs are not high on my list, I do love autumn designs and you did a beautiful job on this one. I am sure you friend will treasure it always, and it will always be a reminder of that particular assignment.

My kids are military and they go through the moving every three years or so (just moved to Louisiana). It is sad when they have to say good bye to friends, but there are always new ones at the next base, and pretty soon they have friends all over the world.

I'm in Louisiana! If they're Air Force then we're probably in the same place!

Love the owl and the black background makes it really pop.

My issue is suppose to arrive today along with some floss, but my first Halloween project is going to be Old Witch Mary. That said, since I have yet to see the patterns in the mag I may change my mind. :)

I have to admit it was a bit too tiny for me to stitch on a black fabric and in hindsight should've done it 2 over 2. I don't enjoy stitching with one thread as I can't do a loop start. It was a good lesson
