OT- What's Pinterest all about?

I've seen a few quilting pics on line and there is a link to Pinterest. What is this forum and can anyone tell me how it works?

Oh, I can't wait to see an explanation! I've been there (on pintrest) & didn't really understand it--just all kinds of pictures [which actually did help me understand a thing or 2] but I just didn't get the 'jist' of it all, ya' know?

Pinterest is used to pin things that you like, want to try, etc. You separate the "pins" (essentially bookmarks with pictures) into different "boards" for organization. You can also search and see what other people have "pinned" and "repin" things to your own boards. Once something is pinned to a board, you can click on it and go to the webpage where it is from.

For example, I have a board for craft projects, inspiration, recipes to try, stuff like that. It lets you see it all in one place and go bsck and find things later on.

Yeh, I know! I just didn't get it at all and wondered what it was all about etc. Thankfully Aerona has just explained the general jist of it. Not sure if its something I can get into or not.

I don't usually understand explanations like that...but recently I've been ALL OVER the internet (ie: looking for rooster stuff for my new kitchen) and I don't always remember where I saw what so I *try* to bookmark--but I have about a million of those already, so I can see where "pinning" something onto my own board would help me a lot! (I wonder if there's any way to make 'em private & NOT viewable by everyone?)

WAY OFF TOPIC HERE: but the appraisal came in on Friday with $300 wiggle room! We will be closing by the end of the month & moved in there by Sept. 1!

Regarding Pinterest - I love Pinterest! Once you learn how to set up boards and how to pin stuff, you'll never go back to bookmarks. It's sooo much easier to go back and find things I wanted to do but didn't have time to think about at the time I saw it. I avoided Pinterest like the plague for a long time (I have a thing about doing what everyone else is doing) but I finally gave in and it's not as difficult to navigate as I thought it was going to be, espcially once I understood the concept (giant electronic bulletin board.) I even have a cross stitch board!

I love Pinterest and have a bunch of various boards. But it took me a while to figure out how it all worked. It's a way to pin a photo that links to a website, a blog, a magazine, etc that will give you the instructions on how to do/ buy/ make the thing in the photo. Some is just a photo which is enough to give me an idea. And yes, some boards can be made private.

I have a camping board that has various things for camping- gadgets, menu ideas, things to keep kids busy, ways to keep mosquitos away, organization ideas...
I have a sweets board for all sorts of sweets recipes- cookies, pies, cupcakes, frosting...
I have a patio board for ideas on decorating my patio- pallet herb gardens, globe towers, container planting..
I have a private board that has gift ideas.
I use it for lots of things.. except stitching. That's probably my least pinned board.
My teacher friends use Pinterest for lots of classroom ideas.
I have a friend doing a home project... so she's looking at various home decor ideas. And another friend fixing up back yard and looking at kids playset ideas.

My two most used boards I made are "places I'd like to go" and "sewing". I browse at night at bedtime on the iPad and pin all kinds of stuff that I otherwise wouldn't remember the next day! I also have a baking board, which I anticipate using more when the weather turns cold.

I joined but don't use it much. I just use it to look at and pin what others have pinned! I guess I way under utilize it. I was the same on Ravelry. When I was doing lots of crochet, I joined Ravelry and didn't use it either. I'm still doing it the hard way, book marks.

I've been wondering about Pinterest, myself and scratching my head over it. Thanks for bringing it up, Anna Marie!
Like wendywombat, I don't "do" Facebook either, but It looks like you can join with only an e-mail address.
I've just read their " Terms of service" and "Keep Your Account Secure,"and it all sounds a bit like a minefield. But If it's used with caution, it looks like it can be very useful.

I first started using Pinterest when I was looking for ideas for my "Best Lady" outfit (I was the equivalent of a Best Man at a Civil Partnership in May).

You had to install this extra button on your browser (a bit like the Amazon "Add this to my wishlist button") and then wherever you were on the internet you could click "Pin It" and the image would be saved in Pinterest.

This meant that I had a page of dresses from all over the internet and I could compare them and decide which ones I liked best. Then as others have said if you click on the image then you go back to the original website. So you don't have to remember where you saw the "perfect" dress/shoes/handbag. The computer was remembering for you.

I've seen lots of people use it as a place to collect recipe ideas and craft tutorials or for wedding ideas. All the kinds of things where traditionally you'd be cutting pages out of magazines and pasting them in a big book....

Not sure if you can see it without being a member of Pinterest.

There is a way to link Pinterest to Facebook.. but I don't do that. I like to keep things separate.. especially from Facebook.

I am a visual person. Bookmarks never worked for me. I need an image. Pinterest works better for me.
The way a friend explained it to me .. imagine you are sitting in front of a big pile of magazines.. you rip out pages of things you like and tack them onto cork boards- recipes, decorating, organizing, gardening, vacations, dream kitchens, funny quotes, kid activities, wedding gift ideas, party themes.. whatever it may be. (basically.. just what Flo said.. as we were typing at the same time!)

Pinterest is just an online version of that.. pinning random bits of things you like onto online boards that you can come back to later on.

Well after a lot of fussing about, I've made a start by adding a board with some of the Primitive Hare charts that I would like and one with some William Morris designs I like too.

I can see why it's a useful tool rather than book marking but its hard not to bookmark because it's habit.
