Here we go with Day 4 of this mixture of a Bingo.

Today"s numbers are #9 and # 25.

Image

However here is #9 Coronet Peak, Queenstown (NZ) well known for its ski runs,
snowboarding etc etc. This is one of my own pics and the guy standing there admiring the view over Queenstown is one of my younger sons - not sure which one though as both were at the ski field that day. The mountains in the background are The Remarkables on the opposite side of Lake Wakatipu to Queenstown. In summer you can drive up there and I have been there after a very light snowfall. The Remarkables get snow any time in the year and I can remember one Christmas Eve looking out the window and seeing fresh snow on the tops!!!!!

Here is # 25 - the beautiful Jacaranda tree which is next door to us here in Brisbane.

Image

I first saw Jacarandas on a visit to Perth some years ago where it is planted along many of the streets over there. It was so beautiful driving under this avenue of mauve/purple flowers. It flowers in September/October on bare branches and the flowers last until the new leaves come through.

The tree next door is a picture of green and goldy brown as it is preparing to shed all its leaves (and leave a mess on their lawns etc.) and then will come the flowers - a bit later than usual this year possibly due to all the rain we had earlier in the 'winter'. This tree doesn't always flower my daughter tells me, it has been known to drop its leaves and no flowers appear - or keep green through until the next cycle!!! I don't think the flowers have a perfume - not been close enough to sniff at them.

So there are tonights 2 for you and hopefully it will see everyone on the board with at least 1. Good Luck.
Jenny will draw the next 2 nights so watch out for those numbers. Is this time ok for everyone or would you prefer to get the numbers later in the day? Do let me know as I can easily change to doing the numbers in our mornings. :D

I don't mean to be picky but are today's numbers 9 and 24 or 25?

Here are Day #5 numbers which are #4 and # 16.
# 4 Akaroa Harbour (New Zealand)

I think my most favourite place. It is situated on Banks Peninsula and just across the Port Hills from Lyttelton & Christchurch. It harbour is the crate of an dormant volcano and as such is very very deep. The US Fleet anchored in Akaroa during WW11 as the bigger ships could not get into Lyttelton Hbr - the port for the city.

Its biggest claim to fame is that it was first discovered by a Frenchman who claimed it and the whole country for France. He didn't know that the country had already been claimed for Great Britain just a very short time before - a matter of weeks if my hazy memory is right.

There are lovely walks, beautiful beaches covered in shells, crabs to look for in the rock pools, great shops and best of all (a few years ago) the trawlers would come in late in the day and we couldbuy fish and crayfish right off the boat.

Image
This is the main wharf where the trawlers still anchor to unload their catch but these days it goes straight into the coolers as they are all part of a big fisheries firm, so little is sold direct now. The fish and chips at the local shop are just something else - absolutely yummy.

The harbour is open to the southerly direction and I can remember a day when I was sent down that long wharf to tell Dad it was time to pack up his lines etc and come help pack up. Mum had noticed the trawlers all coming in in a big group - a signal for a bad weather change. By the time I reached the sheds halfway down I could hardly stand up the wind was so strong.!!!!!

FOOTNOTE, Been browsing the net and here is some history for those of you who like to know things

Captain Jean Francois Langlois bought some land in Akarao village (from the Maoris). in 1838 then returned to France to encourage settlers to come over. First settlers arrived in 1839 and set about creating a village in spite of learning that the whole land had been claimed for the British Crown and recognised by Imperial Proclamation on 15 JUne 1839.. In August 1840 HMS Britomart arrived in the harbour and the Union Jack was raised for the first time. Most streets in the town have French names eg Rue Lavard.

NUMBER 16 THE NEW ZEALAND FERN.

Image

Image

Upper photo shows a typical fern leaf which I remember from my childhood. There was always a clump of it growing around by the water tap. The shape of this leaf is very similar to the Silver Fern which has long been a symbol of New Zealand - particularly during WW11. I had a silver fern brooch given to me when I was about 7 or so. Our premier National Womens Basketball team is called the Silver Ferns.

The other picture shows the tightly furled new growth (Koru) which opens out to the full leaf. Air New Zealand adopted the Koru as its emblem and was on the tail piece of their planes for many years. Not having seen much of Air NZ in recent years I am not sure if they still us it.

So there you have day 5. Hope it is a successful one for you all.

FOOTNOTE; See DAY 2 for a footnote about the Christchurch Town Hall I have just learned about.

4/10 for me.

It does make me laugh at the Frenchman who was a few days too late! And all the time it was the aborigine's! If anyone can "own" land, which is a strange notion in itself really....
