what "season" are you working on?

Post by craftycarrie916 »

I found a great Christmas stocking pattern that got my cross stitch bug reactivated, but I know it would never be done in time for this year. So I am thinking maybe I should find something for spring/Easter to work on. I know speed isn't the focus of this hobby but I wonder how long some of you give yourselves for the seasonal/holiday projects. Of course the size would be factored in, I'm just wondering generally. I'm suspecting Christmas might be a popular one about now.

I'm generally season-less. I used to do a lot of Wintery/ Christmassy designs. And I would stitch them at any time of the year. But I got tired of the red and green.. and got tired of Christmas all year long. So I am trying to stitch more seasonally neutral projects. I estimate 6 months for any project I do. Most are done in much less time, some take longer.. but as I do a couple at a time.. its hard to estimate. A project for my aunt I wanted done for LAST Mothers day.. I finally finished it maybe a month ago because I got tired of working on it and worked on others for a while.

Of the things I am currently working on:
1) Vintage swimsuits.. so I suppose summery?
2) Strawberries on a vine at the bottom of a hand towel.. springy?
3) A yellow sunflower.. sort of summery because of the sunny yellow
4) Mabels hardanger SAL.. seasonless, in shades of teal and rose
5) Mrs. Claus.. most definitely Christmas (I had to pick her back up again as I was with the people receiving #1-2-3 this weekend. And not enough concentration to work on #4)

all my current projects are seasonless. when I do a project that is for a specific season or for a birthday gift or such I try to start it well in advance so Im not rushing the finish. I have a few christmas HAEDs, it doesnt matter when I start those as time to finish is measured in years.

I seem to stitch a lot of winter/Christmas patterns. I HATE winter with a passion though however I am always drawn to the pretty winter colours :)

I don't have enough finished projects yet but I do plan on switching stuff out as the season changes. I know in the dinning room my parents have a pastel painting hanging up and come November 12th I plan on taking it down and putting up my Joan Elliott Christmas lady I finished last year :) She then comes down again in January and put away in the storage room until next year. Her colours will stay more vibrant this way and last for a long time.

anywho to answer your question...I like to stitch Christmas/winter all year. Usually around this time though I really get the urge to stitch Christmas things (this feeling usually starts late August, early September)

I have a halloween on the go, two season less (cigar girl and god of war) , xmas ornaments i need to get back to (and figure out how to improve my finishing so they are prettier......speaking of how do you attach cording to something stitched on perforated paper?)
I am leaning heavily towards more xmas stuff....
I seem to stitch towards the season i am entering, so about January spring may rear its head :)

Hi neighbor! I live in Citrus Heights and went to school in Lincoln a long time ago. So cool to have someone so close to me join this forum.

I've been working on xmas ornaments, but then I found an awesome 8 ball pattern that I think is perfect for my dad. It was really cheap and I already had material and enough floss to get started so I couldn't resist. So I've been working on that mostly with a little hopping back and forth in between. I'm doing it on dark navy fabric and it's going kind of slow because of that.

I am working on a couple of christmas designs but mostly my projects are HAEDs and non season designs. One is a gecko madness, southwest design, an owl, a Lloyd Frank Wright's design, Bast Cat and an Inuit design.

I rarely do seasonal projects. If I have a deadline, it's for someone's birthday or anniversary. I gravitate toward Halloween designs, but in the last 25+ years of stitching, I might have done one or two. I don't decorate my home for each season or each holiday, so I guess I wouldn't know what to do with seasonal pieces.

Thanks for all of the responses and welcomes. I can already tell this board is going to be a huge black hole for my time to disappear into! Plus every post I read adds another project to my list!

Hello neighbor!! Nice to "meet" you! I'm fairly new to the area - do we have any stitching shops other than the big box stores? I can't seem to find any - one would think at least Sac must have at least one!?!

If I am going to do a small Christmas ornament, I try to start it a couple months before I need it...because I am easily distracted by other projects. If I am going to do something relatively large for a specific holiday or gift, I try to start at least six months early. Like I said, I am easily distracted. :-)

I never follow a season for stitching, I pick projects based on what I feel like stitching next, no matter what time of year it is.

I am currently stitching both a Halloween and a Christmas project, both of which are definitely not getting done this year.

 Hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! I don't do seasonal stitching and this year I am stitching some Hardanger patterns to make coasters for Xmas gifts, but that is atypical. I guess I have a few Xmas themed projects, but I work on them when they come up in my rotation. They won't get finished for years (if ever) but I love them anyway. This forum will cause you to increase your stash for charts, kits, fabrics and all kinds of threads. It will also increase your love of stitching. At least that is what it has done for me. Glad to have you joining us!

I have never done any seasonal projects in cross stitch. I did some crochet ornaments one year. This year I have purchased 2 or 3 seasonal magazines and was going to work on some small projects. However, I have been sidetracked with some requested crochet items for my grands. It won't bother me to work on projects that are out of season. It may be the only way I get them done.

I'm pretty sure the one here closed a few years ago. I did go to one in Alameda awhile ago for the first time. It's pretty cool, but really expensive so I can only shop their big sales.
There is a shop in old time Auburn, but they won't tell me if they carry cross stitch supplies. I have a feeling they do. Maybe we can go check it out together sometime. I get a lot of my stuff online.

Good question! I have a autumn/Halloween themed project going, a few Christmas ornaments and a seasonless project going. I try to do things in the order they come around. I was going to do a Thanksgiving one, but my husband didn't care for the design very much so I scraped it. I thought it was cute, but he was right in saying that it was much more "country" looking than what our houses' "theme" is. *sigh*

I just finished up some Christmas ornaments and I'm currently working on a stocking, so those are seasonal. I have some other ornaments I hope to get done before Christmas this year, but that's about it.

I really just work on things when I feel like it I guess, and the majority of what I do is season-less.
