Blackwork Tudor Rose

Post by starshine123102 »

I'm would really like to get into blackwork and I'm also really into Tudor England. I've seen a few images of Tudor Roses done in blackwork but I haven't found any actual patterns for it.

Also, any suggestions for a good book to learn how to do the fill work would be appreciated!

This site should keep you busy with blackwork in general for a while! Some of the links are broken, unfortunately, but it's still very useful. Make sure you understand the copyright implications by scrolling down to the bottom of the page, tho. Lots of SCA people who have laboriously charted designs from portraits, etc., have had to take their work offline because unscrupulous sorts have downloaded and published them. :tantrum:

Patterns for roses are not really hard to find by doing a search for Blackwork Tudor Rose designs. Sarah May, Derwentwater, Mary Hickmott, all do tudor roses. I'm sure there are others.

Thanks Serinde, that site is certainly a big help!

This is the particular rose I have been looking for, but unable to find the pattern.

I also am looking for a good book to teach me the basics but I can't seem to find anything good. I know that the designs are supposed to be reversible and I have no idea how to make that happen....I'm a messy stitcher, that's why I gave up on hardanger!

And blackwork isn't always reversible, so don't get caught in that trap. Some patterns are, particularly old ones copies from articles of clothing, but many more are not. Don't let that aspect stop you. I use a combination of double running stitch (also known as Holbein) and back stitch to do blackwork very successfully.

It doesn't always have to be black either. Even in tudor times, they used red, blue and sometimes green.

Thank you mags, I'll be sure to check it out!

I'm super excited that I finally found a tudor rose pattern that I absolutely love. I just received my latest copy of CSN and there is a photo of one that will be a project in the next issue. I can't wait!! :D
