Dye Experiment-update 12-2-13

Post by Ainjel333 »

Each time I go into my local thrift shop, I find a few pieces of stitching fabric. Sometimes it's nice and sometimes it is alittle stained and won't wash out...so I decided to try some dye experimenting with it. It's usually smallish pieces too, so I figured they were perfect for an experiment. I have some Rit dye that I am going to play with, but before mixing that up, I decided to have a small go at some food coloring and tea dye.
For the tea, I used several bags of green tea bags since I never drink it. The solid tea dyed piece I just put the whole thing in the pot of hot strong tea and stirred it around and let it soak awhile, the mottled tea dyed one I took out the tea bags still alittle wet and layed them around on the fabric and let them sit. Then I mixed some red food coloring and blue food coloring in some hot water (separately) and used a sponge to randomly sponge it onto the fabric. I decided to get crafty with the combo of the two on one piece. After letting them sit awhile, I ironed them dry, let them sit overnight, then this morning I rinsed them in a diluted vinegar and water bath and then ironed them dry again, then rinsed them again in plain cold water to make sure no more dye came out, then ironed them again ( I figured the heat would really set in the dye).
This is my outcome...what do you think? I've stared at them so long, I'm not sure if they look good or not.

:applesauce: :applesauce: I personally think they look great! I was going to say I especially like the mottled ones in the bottom pic then looked at the top pic again and that first blue looks like a flock of birds to me. (Rorschach tests anyone?) I think you have done a wonderful and creative job and will have lovely fabrics to stitch on.

eta  the bottom pic is a close up of the top  , but the birds definitely are more visible in the top picture. at least to me.

That must have been fun. I think the blue and white look like cloudy skies. I really like the browns. Good job.

What a lot of fun you had with these and they are great. Really love the tea bag one, such a useful colour or a bright piece of stitching. :D

Oh I just love how these turned out and you have given me such useful information to put to use. I have never tried to dye a piece of fabric and seeing this has made me want to take a try at it. We are huge tea drinkers so I always have tons of tea around and I never knew it was so easy to do. Thanks so much for posting this :D

Thanks for sharing the results of your experiments. :applesauce: They all look great. I've only "dunked" fabric but now I'll try sponging. --Carol in Honolulu

About 2 weeks ago I bought a new set of the small bottles of food coloring. I've been reading up on fabric dying and want to try with the food coloring.

They look really good! :applesauce: :applesauce: :applesauce:

I've done tea dyes, too.

If you want a yellow try onion skins or for a really deep yellow try turmeric! I've done both and it's been quite successful.
You need to boil the onion skins.

there are all sorts of natural dyes out there...Just GOOGLE!!

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I did have a lot of fun with it.

Wendy, I love that site and am going to save all my onion skins and try that, I love the earthy tones they give and plan to try the pomegranates also. I think I have some turmeric already so that of course will have to be on the list to try too. :D

This is so fun, I see myself having all sorts of dyed fabrics.

wow!!! I think your experiment is great. I too would stitch on any of your fabrics. I really like the blue one that looks like clouds. I see a beach house stitched on that.

I started dyeing fabric when I had a load of Boring white Aida I bought in a street market...it was a bit soft and I was going to re-cycle it through a charity shop when I thought I'd give it a try in another colour...it's still a bit soft but excellent for small projects like cards and biscornu.

I tried beetroot too! Gave a mauve/pink shade.
I like to mottle the effect rather than an overall colour.

Thanks all for your lovely comments, I have been at it again. :D

This time I used RIT dye. I mixed two cups of hot water to one box/packet of dye. The red that I used was liquid, the others were the dry packets. I just poured some of the liquid dye in a pot and added a random amount of water. I came out with some pretty pieces...and some not so pretty. This is my first pieces that I put in to test before using bigger pieces.
They are orange, pink, green, and peach- in that order from top to bottom.
Image

Here are some larger pieces that turned out to my liking:

once you click on those, you can look through the album, there are several more...I tried a red with black dribbled on it, :gurn: didn't turn out too well...it's a different type of cross stitch fabric too--it's kind of fluffy, I don't know what it is. The ones that I dyed one color and then sprayed a different color on, well, I am hoping that they look better with something stitched on them...hubby says the pink and green one looks like a rag with mold on it... he's kinda right.
I had fun and got some really pretty pieces out of the whole ordeal, some of the colors aren't true on the computer monitor, they look much better in person.
I learned that the dribbling doesn't look as good as I thought, and the spraying doesn't either. The longer you leave it in, the darker it gets-duh. :) Always rinse it before you iron it, only squeezing out the water/dye and then trying to iron it, makes it stick to the iron and leaves a dye residue on it. After pulling out of the dye bath, rinse with cold water till it runs clear, dry, if you want the current color to stay, do not wash or rinse it till the next day. If you want it lighter (remember it gets lighter when dry), then wash alittle more before drying it overnight. After I ironed them dry, I let them hang over night, then washed in a Woolite cold water, then rinsed in a weak vinegar/water bath, they ironed again dry. If it doesn't rinse clear, rinse it till it does.
Black is yucky...not true solid black, and really messy. I also tried a Navy blue, about the same thing, not true to color--more of a dark dark purple, and messy. The solid red one I did turned out pretty, but the one with the black dribbled on it , not good.
I really like how the whole piece doesn't get evenly solid all the way through, kind of a mottled look...no special skills required for that, I just waded the fabric while wetting with clear water, and then placed it in the pot all waded up and sort of stirred it around. Even if the piece is completely submerged, it will come out looking mottled. The only pieces I got solid were the little pieces that layed out in the dye and were too small to wad.
If you're using several colors, or are busy with something else while doing this and your dye baths sit for a few minutes, stir them before putting in your fabric, even though the dye dissolved, it still settled if it sat for awhile. I did peach, orange, pink, green, red, black, and navy blue. So I had quite a few going at once. I did not heat the dye baths. I just used hot water to dissolve the dye initially, and then let it go at that. It cooled off eventually, but I just kept using it that way.
Oh, and when you initially take out your fabric and rinse it till it's clear, and put it on your towel, soak up as dry as you can and then iron it, fold your towel over the other way for different colors, I used 3 bath towels folding them in half, ironing on one side, then on the back, then folding in half the opposite way so I was using the inside...because even though your fabric rinses clear, some dye comes out when you iron it dry,,,onto the towel and will transfer to another piece of fabric if you iron it on the same side of the towel. so I kept track of which colors to use on which areas of my towels & kept doing the same (or very like) colors on the same area.
Hope I've explained this well...I feel like I kinda jumped around in my explanations. If anyone has any questions just ask away. :D
And don't be afraid to try dying some of your white or off white--or stained fabric, it's fun and just use some stained or scraps for your first pieces to get a feel of the color and timing. :D

:applesauce: :applesauce: I am very impressed. I especially loved the orange and the red pieces. I do agree that the dribbled and sprayed pieces aren't as pretty, though, depending on the design you are stitching, might be fine. I think you have found a whole new hobby!

I agree with Carole---and I'm absolutely drooling over the green one that looks like it has blue on one end, 3rd one done in your larger pieces here

Thank you Carole and Karen! :D

I won't be doing anymore dying for awhile now. I think I've gotten it out of my system...
The whole time I was doing it, even though it was fun and I kept thinking about stitching on these fabrics, I still thought :ratherbe:

Karen that one is all the same green, it's just that other half is in the shadow of the cabinets in my kitchen. I couldn't get the lighting to cooperate with me while taking pics.
They are all hanging in my bathroom on their own plastic hangers all over the place so I can make sure they are completely dry before I give a last iron, & roll each one up and put a paper band on it labeling the size and count of the fabric. :D

It came out gorgeously!!!! You definitely have a knack for it and I love that green---I just don't have the patience to bother trying it for myself lol--can't wait to see how you stitch them up
