evenweave question

Post by Arianwen »

Ok this might be a bit of a silly question but I just want to check I'm working this out right.

My Kinkade pieces are done on 18 count Aida but with the number of fractionals I want to switch the fabric to an evenweave. I want to keep the finished size the same if at all possible.

With some consultation with the Sew and so website, I worked out that would mean I need a 36 count evenweave. Am I right in that? (I'm quite surprised how difficult it is to get hold of 36ct - I tried stitcher and cross stitch heaven, polstitches, and a few other sites and the only place I could find it was Sew and so...)

Finished size is 16" by 12" so a piece that is 27" by 19" (the precut pieces) would give me at a minimum, 7" for finishing?

I know the holes are gonna be teeny tiny but working so many fractionals on aida is really frustrating, and I want all the designs a similar size

Yep, 36ct is what you want - I think the only type you can get, in UK at least, is linen (Edinburgh indicates its count is 36, just like Cashel is 28ct etc) rather than a cotton/mix evenweave, Sew and So is the only place I can think of that would sell it, maybe Willow fabrics might have some but SAS is probably cheaper.

I agree--and a 27 by 19 piece would give you enough extra fabric to have at least a 3.5 inch border on all sides

The holes are smaller, but I find that once you get going, it's not too difficult to work with (for me at least).

The fractional stitches will definitely be easier, at least!

Agreed! And it's definitely worthwhile - those pesky fractionals are just too frustrating on Aida.

Thanks everyone, just wanted to check my brain was working along the right lines. Fractionals WILL be much easier and I'm used to working on evenweave, just not such a high count - I'm sure I will adjust though

Cairee thanks for that link, I was a bit nervous about going for a linen because I've read that linen can be a bit 'slubby' but the sew and sew one looks ok. the one you've linked too looks great but I can't see an option for shipping to the uk, and with postage costs even within the US, it would be more expensive than buying the count I can get here. Plus I'd need to go with the 35 x36 to be comfortable with the framing allowance - and that would leave me with loads of left over fabric. I shall consider though cause I can't get anything until after payday at the earliest
