Re browsing magazines in shops......does anyone else get a bit fed up with the ones with the free gifts and therefore bagged in plastic so that you can't see the contents? It drives me mad when they do that. Soapbox time!

Now karen4bells....whatever gave you that idea?
Yes, that does make me a bit upset---usually can sort out what is to be in the magazine by doing the research online--especially since it takes weeks for the UK magazines to arrive in the US.
As for the other topic??? hmmmmm just speculating---can't wait to find out more info on the wildlife due to come out in Cross Stitch Gold

Living here in Germany, just about all mags are expensive, though "Dein Kreuzstich Magazine" is rather cheap with decent charts. Because of this I generally look at the newstand copies to decide before buying.
I really do like the freebies, when they interest me - I just donot like the cutsie stuff/designs - particularly when the character hoes not really have a face...
The only mag I do subscribe to is Cross Country Stitching. Every issue has something in it for me to stitch - although I may even let this subscription drop when it runs out- Why? SABLE
Of course these are only my preferences and yours may be something other than that of a 50 - yr - old male from Buffalo, NY stuck in southern Germany...
William! That's why there are so many mags! We are lucky aren't we!!
I also hate the plastic bags, though you can usually see most of it if you wiggle and squint....it's stupid because I'm sure people will be more seduced to the mag by that one project they see and have to do. That's how I got onto the mags, when I saw JE's Fire Goddess on the front of CSC!!
Another suggestion is if you have a local library near you to check and see if they have any subscriptions - then you can browse through back issues to see if they have designs you like. I know my local council library subscribes to a lot of the Aussie craft magazines and one of the other council libraries gets both "Cross Stitch Crazy" and "Cross Stitch Collection" from the UK.
Maybe I'll have a grumble to the editors about the plastic bags at the same time as I moan about the cross stitching website that Immediatemedia maintain. As you scroll down their web page, there is a background of hearts that goes up as you scroll down. I can't look at it for long as it gives me motion sickness
One of the animal designs in Cross Stitch Gold is at the "nearly there" stage so I'm allowed to say it is a squirrel. It's shown in the back of the latest issue so I don't have to be sworn to secrecy any more
I looked in a local store and could check it out as the magazine wasn't wrapped in plastic.....hoorah!
It wasn't that long ago that I did this commission so someone has had to do a fairly quick bit of stitching to get it ready for publishing. They are the unsung heroes, aren't they?
Yes!! That's another thing that annoys me, the lack of recognition to the stitchers. Some do these days and it's great, what is wrong with a "sample stitched by Xxx" comment???
I admit to being seduced by the free goodies included inside the plastic cover! I mostly have bought woxs. I also jiggle it all around to see the magazine cover.
I did subscribe t New Stitches for a while, which I enjoyed and only gave up because I found my own designs took up all my time so I never stitched anything from it... Still a great read, but a bit expensive just for that
I do buy the odd copy of Stitch, the Embroiderers' Guild magazine, which has all sorts of different techniques and a lot of great creative ideas; an option of you enjoy other forms of needlework beside cross stitch.
Has anyone tried to subscribe to Cross Stitcher digitally? I see from their website that you can get an annual subscription through Zinio. That would at least be cheaper.
Just picked up the December issue which I love, so thinking about subscribing.

I too am addicted to magazines. I love looking through them just for inspiration and am not bothered if I never make a project out of them! My hobby is for fun and if only looking is fun for me I don't feel guilty! I do like the Crossstitcher magazine and the Cross Stitch Collection. I have even made something out of them! See? Totally worth it!
Stitchhappy18, I get Cross Stitcher digitally. It's quite nice, as this mag always includes the 'free gift' charts for digital subscribers. None of the other digital cross stitch mags I get do.
I also get Cross Stitch Collection, World of Cross Stitch and New Stitches. New Stitches is my favourite overall, for the range of techniques. World of Cross Stitch is hit and miss (but when it hits, it's brilliant) and I get Cross Stitcher and Cross Stitch Collection free from my library's magazine app, so why not?
Thanks for the enabling! I am still debating about the digital version. It is cheaper, but I enjoy holding it in my hands. I feel the same way about e-readers....give me a real book any day.
