Post by aora99 »

I am getting ready to start one of the large Disney dreams cross stitches. For those of you that are working on these are have worked on them in the past, any tips before I get started?

The best advice I can offer is to double and triple check your thread cards to make sure you have all the right colours.

the things that have most helped me are gridding my fabric, making a working copy of my chart, and taking the blending filament off the card and treating it liberally with thread heaven before winding it a bit like a bobbin.

other than that - just enjoy!

Gridding has been extremely helpful for me when working on Cinderella Wishes Upon a Dream. It's the biggest project I've ever done so it really helps me to keep on track. I also use one of those purple marking pens to plan out what I'm going to be stitching. The combination of the gridding and marking has really reduced the amount of frogging I've had to do!

Preloading needles is also really helpful. I'll pick one color and work on it for a little while, so having needles preloaded up with that color makes starting and stopping a lot quicker.

I use plastic bags to sort my threads. I bought some at either Michaels or Joanns that have holes in them and I have them organized by color number on metal rings. That way I can keep some shorter (but still usable) threads together with the longer pieces. Make sure that your threads are properly sorted even if they came presorted on cards. Some of the kits are presorted and some aren't, but it doesn't hurt to double check and make sure that they put the right color in the right place.

For whichever kit you are working on, check to see if anyone else has worked on it and if they ran into any issues. I know with the Cinderella kits there are some discrepancies on the chart itself and some of the colors used don't make sense. Lots of people have worked around them in their own way so knowing ahead of time how you might want to handle it can be useful.

Overall, just have fun with it! Find what works best for you and go for it!

I agree with all of the above. I actually have been keeping my shorter strands in the extra holes around the full strands I have left, so you don't necessarily need to move your threads off the cards (as long as you've bought a kit where the colors are already sorted).

Personally, I've been backstitching (though not french knotting) as I go. It really helps make it feel like you're making progress and getting things done as they all are such a massive project.

If you're doing the Beauty & the Beast kit, joyfuljenilee found a couple of mistakes on the color chart - particular symbols without mention of what they are - that she kindly shared with me. Apparently, the company is quite responsive, so if you run into these issues with a different chart, you should reach out to them.

I must be a glutton for punishment because I want to do another one of these when I finish!

[*]Thank you for the advice. Now I just have to decide which one I want to start on. Hobby Lobby had a sale on them and they let me use the coupon on top of the sale so I picked up 4 of them. I got Lion king, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Little Mermaid.

I think gridding has been very helpful for me. I'm working on the lion king right now. Which kit are you going to do?

I'm so jealous! If I can't find a sale, I think I'll need to choose between Lion King and Little Mermaid for the next one, but I think it will be hard to choose!
