I recently bought washable markers on eBay manufactured by Clover. Shipping was free so that alone saved on gas to a quilt/fabric store. Also know I'd be buying and leaving the store with more than just markers, it's the nature of the beast within that's tempting. Received the fine point blue for light colored cloth and fine point white for black cloth. The white applied doesn't show until 20 to 30 seconds later as it dries and appears slowly, like magic. I tested it on a WIP piece and I couldn't believe the ease of tracking stitches to do and done. It was incredibly quicker.
I'll make a template the width of the grid for a 14 count black aida 29"x24". I'll scour Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart for a thin rigid plastic or equivalent i.e. aluminum, vinyl siding for starters, not ruling out hardwood and cut to size in my wood shop. Lay out the cloth after the edges are prepped, lay it flat and pin it to white foam core board, find center then mark each grid accordingly. This way I'll avoid sewing fishing line, Easy-Count Guideline, Red Cajun Line only at this moment since I won't rule it out.

Ok I have to ask, does anyone here actually "enjoy" gridding? I enjoy the results of it but the gridding itself is laborious tedious soporific awfulness.

I grid one page at a time going a few columns extra and a few rows extra for my cross country way of stitching. My eyes can just about handle that and without the magnifying lamp I wouldn't be able to draw any lines at all. I couldn't do the whole piece at once, plus I usually am itching to stitch.

Thanks for the tips everyone - I've never used grids, but I might give it a go if I start my huge HAED pattern!

I have never gridded until I met HAED patterns last year. I found it very helpful no matter if I go cross country or if I park.
Gridding itself is very tedious to me and I was super happy when I discovered DMC Magic guide fabric. They make it white and ecru, aida 18 ct with a 10x10 grid or lugana 25ct with a 20x20 grid.
I am enjoying using the white 25ct for my Mr Peacock and I just bought a huge piece of ecru 25ct to stitch HAED World Travel Bookshelf. I read somewhere Zweigarth make a similar gridded fabric, I think it is a aida 20ct.

Curious now and will do a search on the fabric. Sounds good. Already have plain black for the next one but will need other colors for a HAED.

Silly me I forgot to tell you the most important thing! I bet you found out already by now that the pre gridded lines disappear washing them!! :)

I'm with you on that. The actual task of gridding is amazingly tedious... but the results are so helpful that I put up with it. I guess I'm hoping to find a type of gridding that makes is really enjoyable to stitch, not just helpful.

I would hope they wash out. Now if I can find it here in the states but with a lot of digging I could tho if I can't then no problem I'm extremely crafty. It's the last thing on my mind. Already in process of 10 grid width thin rigid strips for 14 up to 25. I have 14 count, next some samples with a set of calipers in a fabric store, measure and document the width then transfer the width to a table saw equipped with a fine tooth blade in reverse direction or on a band saw with a guide for each strips.

I have been gridding the majority of my projects with EZ-count guidelines since I discovered the stuff while I was deployed to Iraq in 2010. I've developed a bit of a science to determining how much to grid on a piece and where to place the lines. I'm thinking about doing a youtube video to show my process. I learned to stitch around it, and it is pretty much and automatic movement now. I sort of enjoy the gridding process, not exactly enjoy it, but I certainly to don't mind doing it. Aida is very easy. Evenweaves are less so, but still quite doable. I use my DH's jeweler's magnification visor when gridding an evenweave and it really helps. I am planning on trying out gridding with the watersoluble markers on my next full coverage stitch.

Please do the Youtube video, I'd be very interested in seeing how another does it. I'm sure there's plenty of tips and tricks during the process that would help many on here.

I will be happy to do that. Once I decide on a video editing software, then I will get the ball rolling on this.

Wow I wish i new about the DMC Magic Guide Fabric before. I'm gridding out my first HAED project (it's a mini) and the gridding is sooo Tedious :ratherbe: And honestly a big part of me is worried that even with tthe time invested I still haven't worked the grids out it correctly. I'll defnitely use the DMC Fabric next time.

Thank you Oriettait! :D

You are welcome :) At the begining the fabric feel a little stiffy but it softwn up after a bit of working on it. They also make a cream colored version that has less show through when working with dark floss

I tend to use washable laundry pens, with acceptable results...
I've considered the fishing line method, but havent had any large projects to try it out recently
