I think the only real "rule" is to make sure your Xs cross in the same direction, either /// or \\\ all of the time.

Don't expect perfection with your first piece, or your fiftieth- on the front or the back. I've been at this 15 years and have yet to have a project that doesn't have a few extra stitches and a few more stitches that are the wrong color.

Know that this is a slooooow process. Things always take longer than what I think they will. This craft requires patience- learn to enjoy the process.

1. stitch in a way you enjoy. its a hobby not a chore
2. cross your stitches in the same way!
3. dont fret too much about mistakes, most of the time you are the only one that will notice it.
4. dont worry about the back of your work at all. its called the back for a very good reason.

Always make sure to have clean hands when stitching.

Stitches are like porridge - They should be just right. Consistent tension is crucial for creating proper stitches.

Let it all hang out - avoid knots by dangling floss.

Good lighting makes or breaks a cross stitch project. Proper lighting prevents floss color confusion.

Set up your main stitching station so that you are comfortable.

Taking breaks helps to prevent repetitive stress injuries and eyestrain.

Take your time to avoid mistakes. Progress may be excruciatingly slow. Would rather take time and get it right the first time than spend hours removing misplaced stitches.

When choosing supplies, purchase the best you can afford. Everything you choose does not have to be the most expensive. Buy good fabric, floss, scissors. You want your finished work to look top notch.

One of the best things about being on this forum is that you get to read all the great Tips and Tricks submitted by others. Read and research as much as you can and self educate yourself to be a good to great stitcher.

Be proud of what you accomplished and don't be discouraged if others may not see the effort of work done. Some don't know the craft.
