why do kit makers insist on not giving enough fabric margin?

Post by afdish »

Once again I open up a kit and start preparing it only to find the fabric in the kit has barely 1.5 inch margains, which is not enough for me to use my Q-snaps. Last time it was a medium size project, and I solved that instance with a stretcher bar frame, which worked perfectly. But this kit is a small kit, so I needed a different approach. I remembered reading about this on a blog some time ago, so I gave it try.

I cut 2 inch wide strips of fabric and added them to the aida fabric using my serger. (would work just as well with a sewing machine, but my serger is just quicker to get to)

Walla! Problem solved!

Now it goes nicely into my favorite Q-snap configuration...

great idea! and a fast fix! bravo! thanks for sharing this great tip! i am a novice with stitching and i am now using my q snaps for a JE project. but the one kit i did--you're right, no way it would have fit into a q snap. huh. again--great thinking!

This is exactly what I do too - grab left over scraps of 'ugly fabric' and stitch them to the edges of my fabric. I use qsnaps mostly for ornaments and if I left enough of a border to use the qsnaps, I'd be wasting a lot of expensive linen since ornaments need less than 1 inch of a border for assembly, so with waste fabric I can stitch close to the edge of the fabric and not waste too much of the linen in trimming.
