help picking fabric

for my next project I want to do a set of 4 fruits for my kitchen. The original pattern has it stitched on black aida but I want to do it on linen. I want to try and do it on something that isn't completely solid, but only has a very little bit of variegation in the fabric so that it is subtle. Does anyone have any suggestions of fabrics or places to look for fabrics? I've looked at PTP, WDW and 123Stitch and haven't found anything I like yet.

Great project(s) you have lined up---Under the Seas has some very nice hand dyed fabrics---allow up to 2 or 3 weeks to get them as she's a stay at home mom---well worth the wait--I have several of her fabrics

I dunno. I like it on black. If you go for something variegated, it would have to be very subtle so it didn't compete with the design. Linen and jobelan come in black, I know.
