At a loss...

Post by quirkyk »

Ok...so this is probably going to be really simple...but I'll be darned if I can wrap my little brain around it...I keep seeing something called a scissor fob...I've seen patterns, finished pieces and such but don't get it! What is the point?

I suspect it's a species of 'thneed' (a very fine something that nobody needs). It attaches to your scissors so you don't lose them so easily, I guess?

I must agree I found no real need for one but there are some very pretty patterns out there for this cute but useless item. :D

LOL!!! ahhhh haaa!! well I'm def. one of those that has several very fine but needless acquisitions! Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a dire need for one :) But it might be a great little little project for me to try..as I've never done anything that tiny! :) Thanks for the responses you all!

I believe it's an item from a time when scissors were a truely expensive and prized possession and ladies got together for stitching sessions. I think they helped to identify your scissors as well as kept them from getting lost.

Now, I have several scissors for lace and various projects and I have a beaded one for my lace scissors but the fob doesn't get a bit in the way at times. On the other hand, my step mother lost her ginger (sp?) scissors at our last lace weekend. Perhaps if she had a fob on them they would have remained obvious.

Wouldn't a fob also work a bit like a chatelaine or one of those Japanese netsukes? In other words, you pop the fob under your belt and it secures the scissors to you. (The Japanese didn't do pockets but they did do belts so they'd keep things with them by attaching them with a cord to an ivory carving, and when they put the cord through their belts the carving would stop it from slipping through -- see here).

*may have to start making things like that...for everything* I don't do pockets either, but I do belts...and bags :P

I think few things are prized today because of our throw away society. If it breaks throw it away, get a new one. Heh doesn't even have to break. My entire family have gotten new phones this year. Why? This new one's better. Same with computers. I think I'm a little odd in that sense. I've got moblee and will probably keep moblee for quite a few years because even though the camera is naff, the memory is non existant and blue tooth eats battery like sugar, I love it and I do prize it. Even though I rarely use it, if I didn't have it I'd be sad....like my bear. And my last computer lasted 7 years before I finally had to replace it as it couldn't run anything.

If things weren't so easy to replace I think a lot more people would cherish a lot more things.

Thanks cf for all the links. I'd never heard of these before and some of them are quite beautiful. They'd make a lovely little gift with the scissors included, wouldn't they.

I've got a scissor fob, I didn't stitch it though, I was given it as a present a few years ago. It's a clown with a rattle in it, and it attaches by a ribbon.
It makes finding scissors easier when they are at the bottom of a bag, just shake the bag and hey presto!
I have seen some lovely handmade ones though, but never tried to stitch one myself.
