Hello from West Sussex
Hi everyone, my name's Rosemary, I'm 30 and I live in West Sussex in the south-east of England. I'm usually very reluctant to post on forums but I've been reading this one for a year or so and you all seem friendly and not too scary so I'm taking the plunge!
I've been cross-stitching for many years but didn't really have time to do much in the ten years between going to university in 2001 and a complete career change in 2011. I hated my previous job (and therefore my life) and realised I just couldn't continue doing something I enjoyed so little for 40 years, so I decided to pursue my childhood dream and retrain as an airline pilot, qualifying 18 months ago. I now absolutely LOVE my job which has the added bonus of more than average time off, so plenty of time for stitching.
Since discovering this forum I've had my eyes opened to all sorts of exciting cross-stitch designs, and I currently have three active HAED projects of which I will post photos soon. I also have my eye on a Golden Kite design and possibly a Chatelaine, although I'm not planning to start anything else before next year. Generally I prefer reasonably "realistic" designs such as landscapes, plants, animals etc. For some reason I really don't like stitching designs with people, figures or faces even though I like to watch other people's progress.
Thanks for reading - I'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

There is joy on the forum when a lurker delurks.
Welcome from the West of Scotland!
Should I wave to you when you go over the Campsies en route to Glasgow?

Thanks everyone, I feel most welcome.
Serinde - yes we do go to Glasgow, and we consider the Campsies every time as they almost get in the way of the final approach. I will wave next time I'm there and try to fly quietly!

So glad you followed your heart and became a pilot! My 6-year-old granddaughter talks of nothing else but being a pilot when she grows up. Did you fly for personal pleasure before making the career switch?
You'll love participating in the forum more than just lurking. Who knows ... you may inspire more "lurkers" to join in the fun!

Hello and welcome from Kent. If you are based at Gatwick you may well be one of the many who 'bank' over us at busy times. I'll try to think it's you and smile rather than complaining about the noise! I hate flying and think that you're amazing to happily pilot a plane. Look forward to hearing more from you.
Re: Hello from West Sussex
Jean - I've wanted to fly since my first passenger flight at the age of 5 or 6 but no family or friends flew so I never even considered it as a career option originally. Once I started working after university I got my private licence, initially as a hobby, then realised it was possible to get a commercial licence so spent a couple of years saving money (and ignoring parents' quite legitimate concerns). I was then fortunate enough to be accepted on an airline mentored scheme so had a job waiting for me at the end of training. It was the best decision I have ever made - I still can't quite believe I actually fly big jets for a living!
Ayna - sorry, yes, I am part of the orange contingent in Gatwick. I will try to be quiet...

Re: Hello from West Sussex
RosemaryD, I do hope you keep your joy of flying. I can remember my first flight aged 4 or 5, a hanger hop across Withybush airfield in Wales at the end of the day, in an open cockpit side by side T21 glider. Amazing.
The reason I hope you keep your joy in flying is that I have a brother who is a senior steward for a Spanish airline (frequently on the Spain to S. America routes), and has been for 15 years. Flying has become so routine for him it feels like being in charge of a cattle wagon and says the pilots feel as if they're just bus drivers playing with a computer.
Regards,
Richard

Re: Hello from West Sussex
Richard, I hope I do too.
I am short-haul with a large number of destinations, some very challenging, and although there is an element of "computer management" there is also plenty of actual flying to be done. I have flown with several captains recently who are coming up to retirement but don't really want to because they still enjoy the job. I have no aspirations to go long-haul as I suspect I would get bored and the lifestyle does not appeal. I have great respect for your brother and all cabin crew - I would want to hit people within 5 minutes in that job!

However he never has, yet. Occasionally he gets one of his bigger Spanish stewardesses to flex her muscles, & the miscreant usually quietens down - My brother is 6'2", was in 10 Para (the TA Paratroop regiment), looks quite squat due to his shoulder width, but still is a lot more lightly muscled than this lady...

Regards,
Richard
