All Things HAED: questions, advice, supplies

Post by speart »

I noticed that we have quite a few random threads that all come back to one thing: how to be successful with these crazy--yet incredibly wonderful--designs. As a HAED newbie, I thought it might be handy to have a wealth of info all in one place for questions (gridding, fabric, stitch type and floss usage), advice from seasoned HAED addicts, and chatter about handy tools and other supplies.

So, here's a question for the group: I'm busily kitting up The Village Bookstore (It's PURPLE, and a bookstore, and a Victorian house....what more can I say?). I could use some fabric suggestions. Most of my pieces are done on either 28 or 32 lugana/jobelan/linen. I'm fine with 25 ct, but I know I don't want linen for this one. Thoughts on a certain type or color?

I love the design and love Spangler's charts. Have you joined the HAED BB? There is a wealth of information there. You can also get to it through a link on the HAED home page.
I have had a progression of sorts in the type of fabric and style of stitching that I use for HAEDs. My current preference is to tent stitch 2 over 1 on 28ct lugana. Generally white. Color doesn't matter since everything is covered. I also have some that I am working 1 over 1 full cross on 25 ct lugana or jobelan. If you aren't sure of what count and how many strands to use I would strongly suggest that you do a sample of at least 20 x 20 stitches including a good bit of confetti in there. You don't want to find out too late (as my oft told tale of restarting an HAED after 6+ pages) that your piece is either too bulky for easy stitching or your coverage isn't good. And of course remember to post lots of updates for us so we can enjoy your progress along with you.

The best advice anyone can give you is test stitch, test stitch, test stitch! I've also done a YouTube video on HAEDs for newbies - no advice there that you won't find on here or on the HAED forum, just a different method of delivery! We all stitch our HAEDs differently - but it's what works best for you and your style of stitching that counts :D !
