What is Backstitch

Hi just brought my first sampler and was wondering what the instructions mean when they say "once you have completed cross stitches add backstitch". Is it to do with finishing off at the back when you have completed a section of cross stitches?

Hello and welcome to the forum---back stitching is the outlining stitching to give detail to stitching projects---It also can be used for lettering on samplers etc. Here is a link to a you tube video that explains it
