Using evenweave and silk floss for 1st time - tips?

Post by JenJ1978 »

I did look through the existing threads, but I didn't see this exactly. I'm not sure if this is in the right section either.

I do know how to cross-stitch on Aida with regular floss, and I've completed multiple projects over the years.
I'm considering trying non-Aida fabric and other types of floss but I'm a bit nervous. I'm also a complete newbie to beading. What tips can you share with me about working with non-Aida fabric, or how to decide on a good one for a first project? Working with flosses other than the standard embroidery floss? Any needle recommendations? Specific product recommendations on the fabrics are great too. (I'm considering the A-maze-ing Desserts SAL and I want to make sure I have the skill set to match that expensive thread and fabric!)

I have a smaller Dinky Dyes pattern coming to me, along with floss. I do know to cross each stitch individually on the variegated threads. I will need to decide on a fabric next.

Hello and welcome to the forum! I would recommend using an evenweave, in 28 ct for a first non aida project and to try it out on a small design---either jobelan or lugana should work. I usually opt for a size 26 needle for nearly all of my stitching. Most important, have fun---you can always use a scrap of the material to try out first

I agree with Karen. I'm going to do my Pumpkin Swirl on 32 count Lugana; it's a really nice fabric and a dream to work on. I've found when working with silk floss I just have to keep a stitch-friendly lotion on my hands (Udderly Smooth, for example); in the winter my hands can get too dry and "snag" the floss. Looking forward to you joining us in the SAL.

 Hello and welcome to the forum from South Carolina! I agree with Karen and Debby. I am planning on doing Plum Pudding on either a 28 or 32 count Lugana (Haven't ordered anything yet). Haven't decided on the floss yet. I like a size 28 petite needle for my stitching. With my magnilight I don't have trouble threading it and I have several needle threaders which can help me out when the needle or the floss are stubborn.
I think it will be a fun SAL and I hope you will join us!
