Snarled by a Christmas Stocking

Post by SarahLSells »

I bought a stocking 5-6 years ago as a first project. I didn't realized how complicated it was. I just had a baby boy in April and while pregnant decided to complete the stocking for him. Over a year has passed, and I finally have it finished! I was searching for help to sew it together and found myself here, among the forums. Sewing is not my forte.

I have really enjoyed cross stitching, and plan to do a second stocking for a future bundle of joy down the road.

Thanks for all the help I have already found!

 Hi Sarah and Welcome from me too. I am too one who has not put together a stocking design for at least 20 years and how on earth I did it then I have no idea. Are there no instructions with the kit which would be of help? Perhaps you could email the designers and ask for help.

On the other hand I am sure that someone on here will be of help with this. :D

Hi Squirrel and Karen4Bells! Thanks for the welcome.

I actually found a great tutorial by Katiespark in the forum already. The instructions that came with included a single piece of felt to use as the back of the stocking. I couldn't stand the thought of not lining it and protecting the backside of the cross stitch. I am working up the nerve to sew it before Thanksgiving so it will be the first decoration I hang up :D I will post a picture - I'm so glad I found this website!

I hope you'll let us see the stocking when you've got it all put together. I've done a lot of stockings (see my gallery), and I've lined each one with a muslin type fabric and I usually use a velvet or velveteen type fabric for the back.

 Hi! Welcome to the forum from South Carolina! I'm glad that you found us and found a tutorial which explains how to finish the stocking. I find that when someone asks a question here, someone else knows the answer or has a good idea of where to look to find an answer.
I hope you will show us a picture of your stocking. We love pictures. Are you working on any other projects?

Thanks for the greeting Carole and Debby!

I will have to take a look at your stockings once I get gallery permissions Debby. I found it funny that I ran into a Dad who had just finished another Dimension pattern at the craft store while buying the fabric for finishing. We had an instant bond after both working on a stocking for over a year.

Carole - I haven't started another project yet. I have another stocking ( ) for our future second child (  ), but it seems weird to start it without even having that bun in the oven yet. I think I'll enjoy looking at what others have done to give me inspiration for future works.

Aw, thanks, Sarah. I really enjoy doing stockings and while I don't need any more projects, I kinda wish I had someone to do one for. You must like them, too, if you're ready to do another. But as you say, the bun isn't in the oven yet, so now you have to find another project (or several). :-)

I just finished my first stocking and got backing/lining fabric today! So nervous to sew it all together. Already have my second stocking in the mail for the little guy in my belly :D
