I learnt "fancy work" as embroidery was known then from my Grandmother and she only used Anchor which was the only thread available.
Sometime in the 50's DMC became available and more easy to find and I just gradually switched over to it. Since moving to Aussie I have rarely seen any Anchor threads at all. I guess because it comes from the UK and is more expensive that has stopped the LNS from carrying it.
I have an almost full set of DMC plus quite a stash of Anchor mostly from the 40's and 50's which i use on cards etc as no way can it be matched now.
I think one of the reasons DMC is becoming known for knotting is that they 'recently' started twisting their thread a little more tightly for some unknown unreason and I think this is the cause of the knotting. I know if I am using thread which I have had for some years and then start a new skein of thread it is easy to see there is fractionally less coverage with the newer thread and less sheen too.

My main reason is that it's just easier for me to get my hands on DMC.
I use Anchor for blacks and whites.
Anchor requires me to go to an LNS or order online.. I don't do either very often.
When I do go to an LNS, I'll buy a few skeins, so I'm good for a while.
DMC I can pick up at a number of craft stores near me.
