Kit Discrepancies? Kinkaid Disney Dreams Bambi

Post by stitch_me »

After I put the grid on my fabric I measured and noticed the finished size is not 12x16 like the package says but 13x18. I have counted my blocks/rows backward and forwards so they are correct. Last year I did the Snow White's Cottage which now framed doesn't cover much of the stitching, so I measured it and it is roughly 12x16 like its package says. I am using the 18ct aida that came with it so I didn't change count sizing or anything. I guess I will continue and start stitching but I wanted to ask if anyone has this kit and noticed the same thing.

Thanks

P.S. Finished Snow White and Joan Elliot's Buddha that I just completed are at the link in my signature.

I would not be happy with that but as long as you have more than enough unworked area to allow for framing/finishing it wont really matter, however if its going to leave a tiny margin at the edges i would be inclined to get in touch with the manufacturers and ask them to change it.

Am I correct in saying that the package says it includes a piece of fabric that is 12 x 16 and the fabric that came in the kit actually measures 13 x 18? If that's the case, I don't see a problem. If it were reversed, I'd be concerned; but getting a bigger piece of fabric is a non-issue.

If you're talking about the size of the design, then give us the dimensions of the fabric and the stitch count for length and width. Let's see if it's a problem. :)

Yes it will have enough area around the finished work to be framed. Joann's and Michael's both say they can frame easily with only an inch of border and this will end up with around 1 inch on each side and 1 1/2 inches on the top and bottom edges, although I usually make sure all my works have around 2-3. I think I can work with this.

I'm pretty sure the Snow White kit gave me a 2 inch border all the way around once finished. All of the Disney Dreams patterns are 12x16 so I wonder what happened with this one.

The size 12x16in is finished stitched design not the piece of fabric that came with it, sorry if I was not clear. The fabric itself measures 16x20, 18 ct aida, but the actual stitch count is not listed anywhere.

Have you tried contacting the company to get a bigger piece of fabric? Even if 1" is enough, if it was me, I'd prefer more. I always allow 3" to 4" on each side.

No I have not contacted them (this kit was a Xmas gift); to me it would just be easier to drive 2 miles to JoAnns and buy a cheap roll of 18ct and start over. But that still doesnt explain why the finished size will be bigger than whats stated on the package.

This is probably a silly question, but is there any chance they included the wrong count fabric? Maybe it's 16 and not 18? It is a puzzle, definitely!

Debbie you are a genius, where is my brain, that was exactly it! There are 16 holes/squares per inch plus I compared it to some 16 ct I had on hand to double check, so they put 16 ct in instead of 18 ct fabric. I will be sure to check fabric count size in all future kits I ever get.

I used the water washable marker for my grid so I will wash it and store the fabric for a future project. I will go buy some inexpensive 18 ct this weekend and start this project over. Thanks for the brainstorming.

I will let the manufacturer know about their oops.

Whoohoo, Debby to the rescue!!

Lucky you gridded it beforehand, that would be very annoying to find out when you'd stitched half of it!!

Niki, once I learned how to grid I do it on every one now, and for this reason here that it gives an added bonus before starting. Yeah if I had just whipped out my fabric and took off sewing I'd have been so mad later. I'd have run out of some floss colors before finishing too.

My mother has stitched for over 40 years and I keep telling her to start gridding but she hasn't bothered yet. It does make for ligher work.

How do you managed to get the water soluble gridding to come out if you don't mind me asking? I've had problems on two occasions - I've tried washing with cold water, and with warm water but the blue turns yellow and leaves yellow grid lines. Not great when you've done so much work.:(

Good thinking Debby! I didn't think of fabric count as the issue.

stitch_me

I'm glad that you got that solved before you started stitching. I still think the manufacturer should send you the right count fabric. And I hope for their sake they didn't have this same error in all the kits they sold.

Carole,

I just emailed the mixup to MCG Textiles so that they are aware, perhaps they will send me some fabric but I won't lose sleep over it if they do not. I will post their response here if and when I receive one.

I'm glad that was sorted. I feel better that you're getting another piece of fabric.

She sounds like me. :) I've never had a reason to grid, so for me, it would just be busy-work. Of course, I always cut my own fabric and leave a 6-inch margin all around, so I have plenty of wiggle room.

Well I hope so. I decided to wait to hear back from them before I go hunting for a replacement piece of fabric.

Yay! I'm glad we solved the mystery. Now hopefully the mfg will take are of you with a proper piece of fabric to replace the kitted piece. I don't do a lot of kits but I will from now on confirm the count, especially since I seldom grid.

Sorry I seemed to have missed this post earlier.

So far I have never had my grid not come out completely. I use cool or luke warm water usually, but also to be on the safe side I only use the ink marker on projects where all the space is stitched anyway. For projects with open space I either don't grid or I use guide line/fishing line instead (which I'm not sure I care for as it seems more of a pain to use).

How long did it stay in before you washed it out? Perhaps time and any dirt/oils that got into the fabric increased its staying ability. I have used it on projects with open space with hard to stitch areas where I drew the grid on and once I stiched that area I wet it right away so it wasn't even on the fabic a few days and came right out.

I don't completely grid, just stitch around the page border. This gives a reference around the edge which seems enough for me. I do need a crutch to help my positioning, but every 10 stitches or so is too laborious. I want to dive in & get started...

Thank you for getting back to me:) - These are all good points actually, perhaps I leave the ink in too long. I just assumed you left it in until the piece was finished or until the ink faded in the sun. The funny thing is that is came right out of another piece I did ( thank goodness) which gave me the confidence to continue using it so I was quite shocked when I found it came out of some of my work but not the whole piece. I googled the problem after that and the best I could come up with was that some people had great success with it, and others like me, not so much. Not terribly helpful.
