Quilting"floss"vs xstitch "real"floss

Hello once again my kindred stitching sisters!
In preparations for an upcoming, major, heirloom quality quilt I will be starting shortly, I have been to a couple of LQS gathering fabric & necessities . The center section of this quikt is all Red Work embroidery.... here's my huge dilemma. Both LQS provided Thread, Sulky 12 wt Hedvier, matte finish. It sounds as though quilters do not use Floss, at least in this project (Crabapple Hill Winter Wonderland Quilt). Have any of you ladies 'substituted' real floss with this weight thread or used thread at all? Do you have any recommendations for a single strand something to use, or a nicer, better floss than my standard DMC available at my craft store?

The integrity of this quilt matters a great deal to me. The thread seems of good quality, and the mere thought of not pulling apart six strands every 30 minutes Is enticing I must admit. Maybe quilting life has different rules than my cross stitching & embroidery life? It is a first fir me to blend my two passions & I especially want this one to be a stunner!

I threw the local quilting teacher into a spin when I used DMC for all of the applique and embroidery on a Queen size Baltimore Album quilt twelve years ago.There were dire predictions that it would not hold up to being washed on a regular basis,it would fray etc etc.
I have used and washed the quilt regularly and all of the stitching is perfect as is the embroidery(masses of French Knots as flower centres)
I would not hesitate to use DMC again on a quilt.
