Quilting"floss"vs xstitch "real"floss

Post by nhmomquilts »

Hello once again my kindred stitching sisters!
In preparations for an upcoming, major, heirloom quality quilt I will be starting shortly, I have been to a couple of LQS gathering fabric & necessities :). The center section of this quikt is all Red Work embroidery.... here's my huge dilemma. Both LQS provided Thread, Sulky 12 wt Hedvier, matte finish. It sounds as though quilters do not use Floss, at least in this project (Crabapple Hill Winter Wonderland Quilt). Have any of you ladies 'substituted' real floss with this weight thread or used thread at all? Do you have any recommendations for a single strand something to use, or a nicer, better floss than my standard DMC available at my craft store?

The integrity of this quilt matters a great deal to me. The thread seems of good quality, and the mere thought of not pulling apart six strands every 30 minutes Is enticing I must admit. Maybe quilting life has different rules than my cross stitching & embroidery life? It is a first fir me to blend my two passions & I especially want this one to be a stunner!

I look forward to your valuable insight, recommendations & comments. I treasure this sight more than any of you know. Blessings to all. Linda

I have used DMC floss to embroider panels on a child's quilt and I have seen others using it too - quite often with just 3 strands.

Maybe if you look at perle cottons perhaps a 12 gauge might be about the same thickness of the threads you mention? I am sure others will have some suggestions for you too Maybe PM our Mabel (Mabel Figworthy) for ideas.

Just flipped over and had a look at your quilt pattern - it is beautiful and going to be awesome when finished I am sure.
Please do keep posting progress with this gorgeous quilt with it lovely centerpiece

Beautiful!

As far as I know, Sulky 12wt is the same thickness as a perle cotton #12, so thickness-wise you could use either. 2 strands of stranded cotton would be about the same thickness, as would a #25 coton a broder.

I don't know much about quilting, but I have made many cross stitch afghans using DMC cotton floss and they have been washed many times. In the washing machine on gentle cycle and then tossed into the dryer on low. I have never had any problems with the thread fraying, running, or in any way not coming out perfectly. Two of the afghans which were for my grandsons have been to soccer games, baseball games. I admit I don't think they have sustained grass stains but certainly have been used. I'm sure pearl cotton would work well also. I do hope you will keep us updated on your progress. This sounds like a beautiful project!
