Lugana

Post by Jennifer78 »

I ordered myself a small pieces of both 25ct and 28 ct mushroom colored Lugana fabric to do some test stitching on and see if my eyes could tolerate the smaller counts for a project I have in mind. When I got to looking at the pieces the color difference between them is quite dramatic. One is a very light colored brown while the other is medium toned. Is it common to have color variations like that between bolts and different counts or is their an error?

I don't really know if that's usual or unusual, but when I look at both counts on 123stitch.com, the description compares both to DMC842. The pictures make the 25 count look lighter, but it's so hard to tell when looking at a photo of a fabric on a monitor. If the difference is so dramatic that you can't use (or just don't like) one of them, maybe you could contact the seller and see if they have an answer?

With all that said, I think you'll love stitching on Lugana. I've never used 25 count but the 28 and 32 count Luganas I've used are so easy to stitch on. And if you like the fabric more than your eyes do, consider getting a magnifier if you don't already have one and make sure you have good light.

It's not uncommon. I can't say if the supplier made a mistake, but I know that different fabric will take dye differently. Are you sure the two pieces are from the same manufacturer?

The same dye lot that makes one fabric boldly colored will make only subtle shading in another. I know 28-count lugana used to be called brittney. It still is in some supplier websites. Lugana is a blend of cotton and rayon --the rayon could be viscose or modal. I don't know if all types of rayon take dye the same.

So, to answer your question: I don't know. It is possible that it's a mistake, but not necessarily. A call to the supplier will tell for certain.

Names of fabrics can be confusing. In the UK, Zweigart 25ct evenweave fabric which is 52% cotton and 48% rayon [modal in this case] is called Lugana. Other counts of fabric have other names: 20ct is Bellana (with viscose); 28ct is either Brittney -- sometimes called lugana, confusingly -- or Jazlyn, depending on thickness (both cotton/modal). I, too, wondered if you had fabric from the same manufacturer.

I ended up contacting 123stitch and they have some amazing customer services. The issue was different suppliers and different dyes used to color the fabric. All of the fabric is beautiful. I am working on a piece on 32ct but I cannot stitch on it with my glasses on I am near sighted (my eyes tend to magnify things up close) and it has just enough sheen to cause problems. The new fabrics are much more matte colored and I am hopeful the 25 ct can be done with my glasses so I can watch TV again while I stitch :)
