Favourite house plant?

Post by mayflowers »

Do you have a favourite house plant? I love the peace lily (sail plant) & African violets & wondered what others like.

The deep mauve African violets with bright yellow centres, single flowers, are my favourite although there are other pretty mauves. Recent years have seen colour variations & some with double flowers - maroon/deep reddish colour & pretty bi-coloured ones with frilly leaves.

I have some Silk Sunflowers! The only plants which I can get to survive my 'care' are some succulents. Maybe if I remembered to water my plants they might survive better!! :tizzy:  :ratherbe:

Often around Christmas we have 1 or 2 Poinsettia plants and my daughter has 3 small Orchid plants growing nicely downstairs.

I'm another with a brown thumb. The last time I had a house plant, was decades ago. A variety of a pink coleus for my first office. It turned completely green in a few weeks. That was before it died. Right now, however, I have a beautiful orchid that was given to me by my neighbors for taking care of their pets (2 cats and an African Grey parrot that is too funny)while they went on vacation. So far I've been able to keep it alive and it's almost a month old now. So I guess its my favorite (only) house plant right now.

I fear our house is usually too cold in winter for house plants. My wife has palpitations of the purse if the thermostat exceeds 10C. And often complains how cold she is. We tend to have a running battle throughout winter as I keep turning it up as far as 12C and she turns it down lower to compensate for the extra unwarranted expense caused by my profligacy.

Ah well, think we'd kill off even the cast iron plant.

Regards

Richard.

Hi, my name is Linda and I kill plants. My friends won't allow any in my home because they commit suicide just being near me.

I absolutely love African violets, but haven't grown them in years. What I currently have are Pothos and Christmas Cactus growing indoors. I used to have much better success growing houseplants when we lived in Illinois, but for some reason have much worse results since we move to Florida over 2 decades ago. Thankfully, a lot of the plants that were considered houseplants in Illinois, will grow quite nicely outside here. Among those, I have Peace Lily, Night Blooming Cereus, Christmas Cactus, Bleeding Heart Vine and a few others!!

I have a through-lounge, which means lots of light. My Dad bought me a Ficus Benjamina when my son was born. After 18 years, it was literally a tree and the children felt that it was weird that they had a tree in the living room.
I had to cut it down and now have a couple of Peace Lilies instead .

I wouldn't say I have a favourite house plant but my Mum has a cheese plant which we've had for years. It grows new leaves every so often and sometimes if you're sitting and it's quiet you can hear it crack as it grows! I'm assuming it's called a cheese plant because the big leaves have holes in them?

I'm part of that group too!!!

When we lived in the UK we has a cheese plant. It grew to gigantic size, amazing really as I neglected it shamefully!
When we sold up I donated it to Bristol Zoo and they came to collect it.

I have fond memories of a spider plant my Mom has had for years. It still lives and one year at undergrad I gave away some of it's babies. :)
