OT: nice to be needed

Post by Mabel Figworthy »

Condensed email exchange with an embroidery magazine, with several weeks between replies:

"Any of these designs of interest to you?"
"Love the goldwork, but it's not on theme. Have you got anything wintry?"
"Not yet, but I could have" [Forever Frosty is designed and a preview sent]

"Is the snowman I sent you three weeks ago any good?"
"Ah, yes, I'm told actually we already have goldwork in that issue. Do you design in any other techniques?"
[sent several wintry Hardanger designs]

"Any news about those wintry designs I sent you three weeks ago?"
"Ah, yes, well, that issue is actually full up now. We'll let you know the next theme because we really like your work!"

One day later:
"We're in a pickle for the next issue and I thought of you - have you got anything on this theme [not specified here to maintain magazine anonimity]?"

I'll let you know if they do actually pick one of the suggestions I sent :-)

:applesauce: What fun! How long before the magazine is published so that we get to know what design they chose?

They want everything ASAP because it's for the next issue and someone dropped out, I gather from reading between the lines. So I don't know exactly, but quite soon, I'd say. (I hope so as I don't get paid until after the publication date :-) )

My first thought was 'oh for heaven's sake!!' Even for publishing (with which I am all too familiar) it sounded shambolic. However, I am very pleased for you, Mabel, that they are taking up one of your designs. :applesauce: :applesauce:

Yes, I know, the whole process has been rather frustrating  but I hope helping them out of a pickle will help smooth the process in future :-)

And I bet there were lots of forms to sign, bank account numbers to give, protection of copyright notices etc.. It will be nice to see though.

On a couple of occasions I've come close to submitting an article to Model Engineer's Workshop magazine, which will be fun if they ever publish. The article the editor's asked me to do is not one I'm keen on doing (describing how to use a few programs I've written for CNC mills) as the help files are adequate if the user can be bothered to read them - and a lot haven't!

Regards,

Richard.

Oh Mabel, that is wonderful. I know you'll keep us posted. :) Coming through for them in a clinch should put you a few rungs higher on the go-to list, I'm sure.

Oh Richard. Reading help files is like reading the directions. No one actually DOES that! Until they've screwed it up by gluing "C" into the hole at "D" and then realizing three steps later, they have to remove "C" one more time. Only then do folks pull out the destructions... I mean the instructions.

Congrats Mabel on having a design chosen after so much toing & froing on their part. Yours designs are wonderful so they should have thought about you earlier. Glad it all worked out & 'Well Done' :whoop: :applesauce:

The silly thing is they've published at least 8 of my designs before now, so why it was all so difficult this time I have no idea
Anyway, the design will be in the next edition of Stitch Magazine, available from 26th July (a bit of patience needed....)

Stitch? Well, that makes sense of the shambles, anyway. The Guild have had an enormous shake-out this past year or so. I hope soon it will be on an even keel again, as they do so much that's good and fun for embroidery generally.

If you looked for Autumn Wreath in the current issue of Stitch but didn't find it, that's because of a convoluted series of events which included a design that could not be published "for reasons of health and safety" (the mind boggles...) but was then published after all with alterations. So my last-minute rescue mission wasn't needed after all, although they are keeping the design for possible future publication.

They have just commissioned another design for the November issue. I'll send everything in, but we'll have to wait and see whether it happens as planned this time!
