Re: 2018 Stash & Grab
When I started reading the above post, at the word "deer" the first thought that came into my head was:"Deer- the same form singular and plural". Must have had too much coffee while working today
, if what was learnt 49 years ago suddenly jumped to mind. Do you think a glass of cold orange juice will help?

Sheep/sheep, also. Also many sheep are a flock; many deer are a herd. (That's the "1,2... lots" principle that every toddler uses.)Podolyanka wrote:When I started reading the above post, at the word "deer" the first thought that came into my head was:"Deer- the same form singular and plural". OJ might help. Certainly won't hurt.

I will completely uncontroversially join in the scones - and everyone can have them jam first or cream first, whichever way you like

Re: 2018 Stash & Grab
Serinde, we did not learn those collective nouns- just a few examples. I remember for fish (same form for S. and P. too) the word is "school". Correct?
Lyudmila
Re: 2018 Stash & Grab
Indeed, Lyudmila!
Very intelligent creatures, fish. Oh, I love the collective nouns in English. A Parliament of Owls! A Murder of Crows! A gaggle of geese.

Re: 2018 Stash & Grab
Serinde, thank you for having taught me two new expressions in one go (and for free)!
I cant tell which impressed me more- the murder of crows or the parliament of owls.
A foreigner never stops learning the language. Here a new word, there a couple of interesting expressions, someone dropped a brilliant proverb or saying- why not to pick up just in case? I am always grateful for all the lessons of the language.

My Scottish friends are always introducing me to new expressions, too. English isn't, after all, the only language spoken here; not only Gaelic, of course, but Doric in the northeast and even Scots, which is like but unlike English. (Sort of like Dutch and German, I guess.) "stramash" (a noisy uproar; brawl), scunnert (fed up, irritated or cross), dreich (miserable or dismal, usually of damp and gray weather), but everyone's favourite is usually "glaikit" (foolish or stupid) or crabbit (cross or grumpy). Whole books are now being written and translated into Scots, which is great fun, although it's more usual to hear it spoken, especially over here in the west.

We had some friends in the NE of Scotland, she spoke recognisable 'English' with a lovely accent...but he spoke Doric and Gaelic when he got excited and she had to translate!!
Collective nouns...now they are fun and often not logical.
This is for you Lyudmila!!

I looked up Puffins in this list and it's a Raft of Puffins!!

Thank you for the link, Wendy. Now I will not finish the tablecloth as planned, that's for sure. I also like puffins, sadly they are decreasing in number, scientists say. They are so beautiful!

Re: 2018 Stash & Grab
What a wonderful conversation and ending with that fantastic link, Wendy. I have bookmarked it for sure. I have had links to other live cams, mostly involving birds (eagles, owls and wood storks are the first that pop in my mind). Fantastic. And the collective nouns is fascinating. I briefly looked at it and saw "bubble of scuba divers" and can't wait to see what else I can find. Thank you.

WW, step away from the monitor!
Are you able to stitch outside? I haven't been able to all summer, despite the warm one we had.
It's a favourite thing, outdoor textiles, although I can't actually see properly to stitch, so it would have been more weaving and needlepoint, I guess. But that didn't happen either. Phooey!

Re: 2018 Stash & Grab
Just wandered in for a look round. Red deer, wonderful. Something special when you see those creatures, makes you feel bubbly inside, well it does me anyway & I'd have a greet big smile too. Wonderful you both see them so close & don't have to hike to see them.
Very cosy in her isn't it? Such comfy chairs & that view, well what can I say ?!
Think I'll be popping in here quite a lot during winter months. But thinking on that it must be just as great in summer too. Do hope I don't et into bad habits but as everything is calorie free 'spect bar drinks are alcohol free. Crisps anyone

Don't worry about calories!!! Hot Chocolate Doughnuts Fresh Cream Scones and home made Jam always available!
Here is the place where you can Indulge to your hearts delight! You can let off Steam and rant.
You can Party All night.
Sleep out under the stars without fear of Pesky Mosquitoes or Midges whilst watching Meteor Showers and Lunar Eclipses.
Catch the end of the rainbow whilst the wild animals graze and the salmon leap. If you look carefully to your left you might just see the last of the Puffins fledging and their parents heading out to sea for the winter.
and if you believe all of that...you are in the Right Place!!

Penelope (it is a name for fabric, not only for person) is my favorite canvas. I have a pile of stamped Penelopes in my stash. It's my favorite. I like flowers and cats. Flowers are easy. You can make wedding anniversary presents and "my condolences" - presents.
And to celebrate the fact one matriculation examination - present is almost a FO concerning the stitching part, I could take some
and some
, and if you ask what I prefer, well...the buttermilk cake is my favorite.

How very descriptive Wendy. Would just love to see the view/skies how you have described in a cross stitch picture so yu see yes, I dl believe it all … so glad I fit in well or else people may think another stupid Welsh women appeared. Some peoples do think we ae a bit on the slow side, but that ain't everyone's opinion. The may think that when I type LL , DD now & then. Today I keep putting 3 llls 7 couple of times 3 ts have got in. Eyes still watery & brain still bit woolly. Cold seems to start going & then comes back. It'll go eventully.wendywombat wrote:Don't worry about calories!!! Hot Chocolate Doughnuts Fresh Cream Scones and home made Jam always available!
