A Scary Sight

Post by Squirrel »

Yesterday morning I had occasion to go into a shop called Choice to look for some larger white cards and found just what I wanted which was fine.

Went to leave the shop down a different aisle only to find it (yes you guessed it) Christmas Decorations along both sides of the aisle.

I mean September hasn't finished yet. I do NOT need reminding that December 25th is approaching rapidly - I know it.

Hey Ho back to my Stocking stitching at the double.

Well I'm afraid you can't escape it in retail our shop starts getting Christmas stuff in September along with the Halloween stuff! Sometimes even the end of August! But I love Christmas so it doesn't really bother me

It used to be not so bad in The Netherlands because you got all the St Nicholas stuff first (for 5th December, the eve of his feast day, when children get their presents) and they tended to wait with Christmas stuff until after that - but I'm afraid it seems to be creeping to earlier and earlier dates there as well!

It is a little scary when you realise just how quickly the year is flying past. I do like Christmas but I would love it if the shops didn't start putting out all the festive stuff in August! It's getting earlier and earlier each year here! Ahh well.

Goodness me having Christmas stuff out in August would be far too much. You have my sympathy.

I can understand Bookshops/Newsagents etc putting out calendars early in September as some people do post such things by sea but it will be a while before I start looking. :)

And I might have even bought some Christmas decoration already :tizzy:
I try to be early with it as long as there is still everything available in the shops. I tend to get into "the mood" quite early but even then sometimes it's hard to find nice things at the end of October.

I wish retailers just waited until after Halloween at the very least!

Almost straight after the Christmas sales, Easter eggs are on the shelves in our supermarkets, in the UK!

Hallowe'en is just about understandable. *sigh* Oh for the days when Christmas couldn't start until Thanksgiving was finished! Or the first Sunday in advent, depending on country. It can be taken too far, however: Scotland didn't really start celebrating Christmas again until the late 1950s when Christmas Day became a public holiday (!) and it was fairly low key. Actually, Christmas festivities were frowned upon from the Reformation here in 1560, and as a whole was banned in 1640 (tho partially repealed 20 or so years later). That's why Hogmanay (New Years Eve) is so important, I guess. but now, we have two big holidays!
