Thank you Lovelies for the replies, they do mean ever such a lot to me.
Mabel, the butterflies are so quick and easy to do aren't they and I love the 3D way they become butterflies when the circle is folded, the instructions can be found here

The Roses are lovely and very simple to do, they are on a foundation row and it gets rolled around itself when the crochet is complete. The lovely lady Lucy explains it much better than I can and I wish I knew how to follow her on the blog/computer thingy, anyway, by coincedence she has been doing some butterflies too. This should take you to her site:

The Roses I made from her site are further down the page under patterns & tutorials and they are her May Roses.
A word of warning though, you may find yourself losing hours there, it's a veritable rabbit-hole (if you can have a rabbit-hole in an attic

)
I just had a play with whatever double knitting wool I had left over from making the Granny Square blanket and I think I used either a 3.5 or 4mm hook, as you know yarns can vary in thicknesses even within the same brand depending on the dyeing process.
Next time I make some of the Roses I am going to experiment with 4 ply and a smaller hook.
Hope this helps.
Edited to add:
The Roses are approx. 1 3/4 - 2 inches depending on the Wool and depending where you place the leaves, in all mine measure 3 inches. Again I hope this helps
