Opinions needed please

Post by Garnet »

Well, you lovely people, as you probably know my next large project is going to be Joan Elliott's Medieval Rose Lady, however I am planning on working from the book of Joan's designs, and bought all the threads from Lakeside Needlecraft as they did a thread pack. When it arrived there was Kreinik #4 212 instead of what the book's chart called for being Light Effects E677, Kate from Lakeside told me the Kreinik #4 212 is what Joan Elliott now has on her Medieval Ladies. Our lovely Serinde suggested it was because Light Effects are so hard to work with, so I put the two options side by side and this is the result.....
Image
Quite a difference, the Kreinik is more of a bronze-y colour and the Light effects is a bright gold.

So, I had a look at the chart and pulled stranded cottons that aren't used anywhere else on the design and these are the ones I need to choose from...

The one on the right is the lightest Mouline etoile available.

I put them all side by side for comparison.....

At first I thought 3820 was right, but then 3821 looked good and then 3822 seemed better and now I have thoroughly confused myself.

I am stitching Rhys the Robin until I can get this muddle sorted out.

So I need your help please lovely people, which shade would you choose given the original Light Effects and the Kreinik are so far apart, or if you have any other suggestions I would love to read them.

Thank you.

Maureen,

I am stitching 3820 and it looks very much like gold. 3821 and 3822 are too pale, and so is 677. As for 3852, it is called "old gold" and looks dark to me. I considered it, but 3820 looks better to me. As usual, cant show a photo of the nearly finished Partridge Bellpull with all the cotton "gold".

Thank you Lyudmila,

My first gut feeling was 3820, I have used it before in many of Joan Elliott's designs, most recently in the Christmas card for my religious friend, it is a lovely shade of gold.

Can't wait to see your bell-pull.

Woo-Hoo!

I have just had a reply from the lovely Joan Elliott herself who said the bookazine was published by the magazine the charts first appeared in and it was they who changed the metallics to Light Effects, Joan herself uses Kreinik.

She ever so kindly gave me the codes which are:

The Gardener ( Medieval Rose in the magazine and bookazine) Kreinik #4 212
The Reader uses Kreinik #4 028
The Musician uses Kreinik #4 102
The Embroideress uses Kreinik #4 028

Three cheers for the lovely Joan, now I can stitch them as they were intended by Joan herself after I finish Rhys the Robin.

:whoop: for Joan Elliot!!! I love that she replied back with the information you needed. Sounds like she not only cares about her designs but cates about those who stitch her designs! I am so glad that you will have no concerns when you start stitching this design.

:whoop: :whoop: it always pays to go to the designer direct. Top Marks Joan Elliott. I am delighted that you will be able to get going on The Emboirderer as soon as you finish Mr Robin. :) :)

What a lovely lady :)

Not all companies are so helpful, I ran out of a colour when I was working on a Bothy Threads design (I may well have mislaid it I don't know) so I Emailed the company to ask if they would kindly send me a replacement which I would pay for, or the colour so I could buy the replacement myself, I never had a reply even though I got in touch three times about it, I won't ever buy from them again even though I like their designs!

That's very odd as Bothy are renowned for their good customer service and sending out threads if you've run out. I'm on their Facebook group and hear alot of peoples stories about it. Sorry for your bad experience Lulu :(

So glad you've managed to sort out the thread Maureen and so lovely Joan contacted you to confirm things! xxx
