Serinde I have to admit to being stumped (though not stumpworked). The layer that covers the shape does just that, it fully covers it, so I'm not sure what you mean with "the colour underneath the first layer"? The only thing underneath that layer is twill fabric, but...
Ah.
Do you mean the little bits of brown on the outside? That, unfortunately, is the transfer where I failed to fully cover the lines
Thank you . That transfer line thing is something I have to be more careful with - I'm too cautious about going outside the lines, and as a result don't quite cover them. Absolutely NOT allowed on the RSN piece so will have to pay extra close attention to it there.
Having said I'll never do stumpwork, I've fallen for a little stumpwork butterfly by Sarah Homfray
Haven't done much yet, but I cut out the butterfly (which is on a very thick Vilene/interfacing), stitched it down, and couched the florist's wire around it. Well, it's a start
I am quite intrigued by this. Looking forward to your next update...

Never say "never" Mabel as sooner or later one does exactly that. It looks very interesting and I look forward to further updates.
We wait for a while and then "Our Mabel" succumbs to temptation. There's nothing she won't tackle!
Ah, but some things I tackle once, and then leave - some things I stick with! I think this will probably be one of the "once" ones (that's not an easy phrase to say )
In FoF I showed this as part of a post about whether or not trying all sorts of things/techniques is helpful to creativity. Constance Howard, a great promotor and supporter of modern embroidery (and incidentally one of very few people, if not the only one, who could carry off having bright green hair without it looking in the slightest bit eccentric - a friend of mine who knew her said he didn't realise her hair was bright green until he saw a photograph of her) seemed to think that trying everything could seriously hamper your development as a textile artist. Although I am slightly diffident about disagreeing with such an authority, I'm afraid I do indeed disagree!
It's a miracle the metal threads didn't melt in the heatwave , but I managed to complete a fair bit of racehorse at the three-day metal thread embroidery class at Hampton Court Palace last week.
WOW Mabel that is amazing and most unusual. I am sure you had an amazing time and have come home full of new brilliant ideas. Thank You for sharing it.

A little more work on my Sarah Homfray stumpwork butterfly. The colours don't blend quite as well as I'd like - the dark blue especially seems rather darker than the one used in the kit photographs - but it's the best I could do!
Mabel,
You may feel that those blues do not blend as well as you wish....but look at other butterflies, especially the red Admiral and the Peacock.
They have dark spots which don't blend with the other colours.
I have seen Blue butterflies in my garden and the darker blues nearer the body are really quite pronounced.
Having said all that...I think the blending with the short and long stitch on those wings is so even and covers the felt backing perfectly.
