Cats

Post by Sojourner »

Not much happening on the forum at the moment, so as it seems we are cat lovers on here - here's my little bundle of fur, in MY chair, of course - well, it used to be my chair :D
4 yo rescue cat from UK Cats Protection - she was really timid when first with us from the cattery - spent the first 2 weeks on top of the corner cabinet. But, see her now...although technically my cat, she prefers my wife's lap - sometimes deigns to spend a bit of time on me...…
Edit - and, as I'm sure you all know, the ancient Egyptians treated cats as Gods, and cats have never forgotten this...

:D :D :D She is beautiful. Of course its her chair. I assume much of the house belongs to her now. I have always gotten my cats from a shelter but up until Rosey they were all kittens 6 - 8 weeks old. Rosey was 3 and no one knew anything about her other than she was in good health and had already been spayed so must have belonged to someone. Whether she was lost or abandoned is unknown. She spent 2 days under the cedar chest in the bedroom and then 2 weeks behind the couch in what we call the computer room (because that's where the computer is) and the next 4 weeks afraid to leave that room. 9 months later she owns the place. She is still very wary of strangers and hides when the doorbell rings but that is getting better slowly. I'm not sure there are many other things that make one feel good, but having a scared and timid and maybe abused animal become one that feels secure and safe and loved in a furever home is one of them.

We had a cat who looked just like your pretty Puss!
She looks quite at home in your chair!! :D

When we moved here to France we "needed" a cat...we were overrun with mice! No sooner had we said it when Mrs Cat arrived, half starved and a bit damaged. She had a nasty sore on her face. Couldn't get near her but she was grateful to be fed. So grateful in fact that she had 3 kittens!! Mrs Cat stayed with us long enough to wean and train her 3 off-spring...then off she went leaving 2 females and 1 male kitten. He stayed long enough to get his sisters 'with kit' ate a load of mice and left for pastures new. The 2 females stayed with us, one living for 15 years with us, the other used to go 'walk-about' regularly and was around for about 12 years.
No cats now but the neighbours cat has taken over the rodent annihilation quite happily!!

I love seeing all these cats. We had a polydactyl cat -- 6 toes on the front paws; 7 on the back. She used to sit very daintily with her front paws crossed. Naturally. As one does. And used to manoeuvre around the mantlepiece clutter without accident. Brill.

My cats and dog I don't know how to get images back off my instagram, so link if anyone wants to see them. It's mostly the dog though because the cats are a little camera shy.

My cats are Teaco and Sooty. Teaco is Sootys mum and they were my friends mums cats. Friends mum passed away shortly before we became friends, we went to the same babygroup and were friendly but hadn't bonded yet so I never met her mum. She inherited the cats and they hated her! Apparently she couldn't even get Sooty to come inside except before bed when she fed her. She'd just stay outside from the moment my friend got up to just before bed and when she was in my friend couldn't even go near her. Sooty would hiss and claw and run a mile! Teaco wasn't as extreme and she would let friend and her daughter near, but she wasn't affectionate with them and mostly just tolerated it. She also preferred to be outside and away from people though. I visited pretty regularly and over time the cats started to see me coming up the road and run inside to greet me. I sat in the armchair and they'd both fight for the attention. Eventually she asked me if I wanted to take them both. So I did.

Teaco has a very slender frame under all her poofy fur and her daughter was even more frail than her when I got them. They almost instantly stopped being outdoor cats. They much preferred staying inside and being snuggled. Teaco likes being on her back in a cradle hold while sooty prefers to put her head in the crook of my arm. Sooty started to grow and the skin condition she's had her entire life started to fade away quite rapidly. She still has flare ups but her worst is now equivalent to her best before. My friend has visited them a few times and she can't believe they're the same cats, especially Sooty. She's about six times her size and healthy so she must have been really underweight before. She is a total house cat and one of the first to run over and greet people at the door whereas I was introduced to her as "that one hates people she won't come over for anyone" and they're total sweethearts now. Kids dog is roughly the same size as the cats and Sooty definitely rules the black gang but they will literally all love on you all day if you let them.

They're good cats! They just needed the right home to bring them out. Somewhere they could feel safe and happy.

Kitties are great and pretty much anything they want is theirs. My Jackson runs the house and I’ve accepted the fact that I serve him.

That must be why we all run round after them. HM Tuppy is excellent at getting me to do things for him - like opening up the front balcony so he can sleep out there, or else having him land on my lap for an ear rub etc. However we love them anyway.

At the moment we have three cats.
Squeaky: A medium sized domestic black & white. He's called 'Squeaky' because he squeaks rather than miaows. I say he's a medium sized cat, but he weighs 10.3lb (4.7kg) and is a tank. Takes no exercise if he can get away with it. He'll be 15 in September, and we had him from when he was a 6 week old kittenish ball of fuzz in a pet shop & my wife fell in love with him. When he was 12 weeks old he grappled a cock Pheasant around the neck and tried to bite his way through. That was his first hunting attempt, and at the time he probably weighed less than the pheasant.
Size wise, Squeaky is tiny next to our other two.

The next oldest cat we have is a ginger & white long hair by the name of 'Rooster'. He got his name when he shoved a family of pidgeons off their nest and roosted up a tree for most of the day while at his previous owners. We got him aged three when his female owner died of cancer and her husband moved to near a busy road & was frightened for Rooster's safety. He contacted the vets & asked if they knew anyone who would take on a big cat. We were happy to, having just lost a Maine Coon Kitten. Anyway, Rooster is now 8 years old and is HUGE. Seven of his eight grandparents were Maine Coon, and the other one was probably a British Shorthair. He has the softer face of a British Shorthair, but otherwise is a fat Maine Coon. He weighs the better part of 14lb (6.3kg) and spends most of his life with 4 paws up in the air on 'His' chair in the conservatory. He moans at us if we sit in it. He may deign to sit on a lap once or twice a week, and if he does, it's usually mine he chooses. He loves, adores, relishes being brushed roughly with his own hairbrush. The rougher the better, and he purrs like a train when it happens, eventually collapsing on his side, grabbing the brush and rubbing his chin with it. He would be ecstatic if we did it hourly. When Rooster sits down, he bulges like a water balloon. When he sleeps, Rooster snores. Hard. We can hear him in the livingroom when he's asleep on our bed, half a house away.

Our final cat is Ozzie.
Ozzie is a real live wire and is 6 getting on for 7. He's a pedigree Maine Coon we got as a 12 week old kitten. He eats more than the other two cats put together. Between 10 and 15 100 gram food pouches a day. He doesn't have worms, he's just busy, busy, busy. He weighs 14lb (6.3kg) too, but isn't putting on any weight. He's a huge long hair Maine Coon. He's 3ft7in from tip of nose to tip of tail, and is also ginger & white. He zooms. Goes out in the morning after eating for a snack and gorges on a rat or two before lunch. He tends to come in for a re-fuel at 1pm, then dashes out doing good all afternoon, coming back in at 3.30pm for a re-fuel and a doze, before going out for an hour or two to do more slaughtering before supper and an early bed. He loves chasing things, never goes at less than a 'zoooooom' and can often be seen appearing over the grass leaping to catch bees, grasshoppers or anything else that catches his eye. He can easily leap 6ft in the air, and when playing 'catch' in the livingroom his back paws have hit the chandelier in the room (6'2" up). He loves chasing tinsel balls, and will do it for up to 20 minutes before tiring, chasing after them & bringing them back for us to throw again. He loves a good growl-up when we try to get the ball out of his mouth for the next throw.. We have never seen him catch a bird.
He loves sitting in cardboard boxes, biting & tearing lumps out of them with his 3/4" (20mm) canines and similar size claws. His paws are about 2" across and the tufts of fur between the pads are an inch long.
He sleeps on our bed. Across it. Which isn't good, as the bed is only 4ft6" wide and the cat can stretch 3ft7". Then he & Squeaky often have spats about who is king of the bed. At 2am. Evil toads. But we love them.
Ozzie will sit on someone's lap, but it's usually a prelude to trying to oust them from their chair in 15 minutes...
Every now & again a loo roll needs killing, and Ozzie is the cat to do it.
Being a Maine Coon with a waterproof coat, Ozzie is not bothered by rain, but he actively enjoys snow and racing & sliding across the frozen fish pond. He gets such a mindlessly happy look on his face when he can do that.
He's the brightest cat we've ever had. He understands door knobs, but his furry paws won't grip them & he gets frustrated, hitting the door in the end. He also has worked out how to open our kitchen fanlight window in such a way that it locks itself after he leaves, and for a long while we were convinced he had a key until he left infront of Tracy.

Oh dear. I could go on for hours.
I probably have...

Richard

Our Siamese figured out how to open doors. And they did. Screen back doors were a speciality... They preferred to hunt rabbit, but our big seal-point male (Chou) lost his 9th life wrestling with an opossum. He was a gorgeous boy, and even looked after Myrtle, our little female chocolate-point, when she arrived. This was back in the day when Siamese were athletically built, rather than the rather anorexic creatures you see in shows.

Thanks Carole. Life got on top of me a bit, particularly work. The spacecraft transport box I've been working on has been delivered, but because the paperwork doesn't yet weigh as much as the 15 tonne box, we have a fair way to go with getting the paperwork accepted. And if you listen carefully, you might hear the sound of moving goalposts. At times it's felt as if there was no point in trying to hit them, as the requirements would be different and incompatible next week. And maybe week after they'd be similar to today's.
Gaah!

Regards,

Richard.
