Your correspondent has seen leaked documents relating to an ultra sensitive project set up by Government intelligence agencies, to use embroidery stitches and patterns for conveying secret information. In this time of cyber terrorism and computer hacking by hostile regimes, a move towards more traditional methods of communication is believed to be essential.What could be more innocent than a cross stitch chart, needles and thread carried in an agent's baggage? Patterns and stitches are so diverse that secret messages can be interwoven amongst seemingly simple embroidered pictures, thereby sidetracking the usual high-tech microdots and Computer generated systems.
Legions of experienced stitchers are being recruited as we speak to start training intelligence operatives - the un-named source for this information states that the process will start on April 1st.

Having used in various embroidery talks the story of the PoW who hid "F*** Hitler" in morse code in a cross stitch sampler I wouldn't even be surprised - but being about to celebrate the 50th of my April Fools' birthdays, I'll take it with a pinch of salt...

I thought it a good gag, Soujourner! In fact, it made me think that, like Morse code, it could indeed be used in that sort of way. Although I'd not be much use, as I stitch so slowly... but for those with turbo needles (another branch of the HM Govt's service), it opens up a whole new world of espionage.
