Its good to take a break now and then and this looks like it will be a lot of fun. We have quite a few members who do several different crafts. If you haven't taken a look at the All Other Crafts section, you should take a peek. Lots of interesting things to see there too.

I am looking forward to seeing how this dragon turns out. I used to crochet all the time, before cross stitching, but never have stitched with such fine thread. Always used yarn.

And I really admire your being able to do it. I really don't know how anyone can get the co-ordination to do something like that. Maybe I'd better rephrase that; I could never do it. I have tried knitting and we didn't agree with each other, and I suspect crochet & tatting would be the same as they both require a similar level of dexterity.

Not necessarily Richard - like you I can't get on with knitting, but I am a reasonably adept crocheter (haven't tried tatting), so they do seem to be separate skills!

Its crochet, though I'm still learning so not the neatest work. But still proud of the results.

I've not heard of tatting, though I have also learnt basics of knitting. My wife got me a hufflepuff scarf kit. Which I've started but not complete yet. I must admit I found knitting easier that crochet, and my crochet is far from perfect though as always I've jumped in at the deep end with it.
For me I find the challenge of a project the most fascinating part. Though I do like getting to the end results too

As Mabel said its a different skill, so you may find it easier, also generally just one hook not two needles. So that's different aswell. One thing I've found is people write down patterns in a few different ways, so once you've got used to that and the difference between US and UK crochet you my find you like it, always worth trying new things at least once

I have seen people do it and felt my eyes cross watching.

If I was to try every hobby I'd like to just once, I'd never do the same one twice & still not live long enough. The things I do currently want to try are proper embroidery like Mabel and really playing with my metalworking mill & lathe rather than the little stuff I've done so far. By that I mean a mechanical clock & a live steam loco to my own designs.

The clock is designed. It's not much more difficult than a sextant.
And here's a sextant to the design on my web site. OK I didn't make this one, it was by Tim Ryan from Bay City in Texas. I confess, I didn't design the telescope, because for some reason I can't get my head round lenses, but the design is available when you click on the image.


I know of five that have been made, Tim's one. One lady in Spain built one as part of her Master Mariner's certificate, a gent in Alaska got bored one winter & made one, a lovely Kiwi lady made one before sailing on her first solo crossing to Australia. She made it so she'd have a backup in case her power failed & the GPS died. The last one was build by a gent in Namibia who was building his whole boat from scratch, hull, junk rig, water maker, prop etc. He used a tractor engine for the power though. He was a very experienced sailor & reckoned it was fine as a sole means of navigation.

Very nice Richard, Im like that, its almost my hobby to collect hobbies lol. Tatting does sound interests, and I can see what you mean about the intricacies after watching some you tube vids. its a shame that we cant spend more of our time doing hobbies though might get through more of them.

I love the little dragon's head. I can't knit because there are too many stitches to deal with. Decades ago, an aunt tried to teach me to knit (I already could crochet pretty well) and I made the ugliest knit vest ever made. I added more than dropped stitches, but really one stitch at a time is much easier to keep track of.

Looking forward to seeing more of the dragon.

I can knit....but can't knit lace designs! All that slipping stitches and passing slip stitches over the one before or wrapping the yarn around the needle to make a stitch blah blah blah!!

I did find a Tatting hook and thread whilst clearing out my Dad's house. It was with some things from his late wife. She was a clever stitcher/painter and knitter. Most of her stuff I gave to her daughter but I kept the tatting hook as she didn't want it.

AS Yet it has stayed as it was left. Did watch a You-Tube Video about how to Tatt, but even slo-mo action was baffling!
Maybe one day......

From what I've seen of Tatting, it does look like delicate and intricate work. Knowing myself, I'll probably give it a try at somepoint.

Here is my current progression the little fella. Just needs some arms, wings and a tail to complete. The heads quite large comparatively to the body as I had added too many extra rows early on when doing the stitches.. but still happy fot my fist attempt.

Aww thanks Wendy, hmm no I've not though of a name yet, any suggestions?
