Re: 2024 The Smile for Today
Some of you may remember the medieval manuscript illustration of a hunting rabbit with snail-falcon (if not, let me know and I'll re-post it), but in that same vein my cousin sent me this:

Re: 2024 The Smile for Today
Yesterday I went for our monthly well being walk .... it was tipping down with rain but the Psychiatrist Zoe, Countryside Ranger Elinor, 80+ year old Nina and I were foolish enough to still turn up. In the pouring rain Zoe finally was brave enough to have a go on the kiddies Zip wire
as there was no children there to see her. We had a short walk and headed in for a coffee where we started talking about our hobbies. Elinor did jewellery making and Nina made cards.
Nina had also attended the Craft show last Friday that I went to. She had been buying her card making stuff. She told us that she began this hobby after she had been "dumped" in her wheelchair in the craft shop while her friend went shopping and the kind lady in the shop entertained her by showing her how to make cards. Needless to say she left with a bag full of card making stuff. Nina went on to explain that she always makes cards for people she knows and while she makes them she thinks of the person, what they like and makes it especially for them.
Having made complementary remarks about what a nice hobby I replied: "Its wonderful first you get the pleasure of the excitement of buying the bits for the cards, then the pleasure of making the card itself knowing who it is for and thinking about what they like and finally you get the pleasure of giving the card to them". Nine looked a bit surprised and said "Why yes! I had not thought of it that way".
Everyone left with grins from ear to ear

Re: 2024 The Smile for Today
When I started writing that it felt like one of the old jokes, with a modern twist:
A Psychiatrist, a Ranger and an Engineer walked into a coffee house. The Psychiatrist said "Would anyone like a coffee", the Ranger said "Is it organic?" and the Engineer said " Careful, we haven't seen the price yet"

Jo, that is such a lovely story -- really life-affirming.
Re: 2024 The Smile for Today
Jo, your story made me smile, and think. What a perfect way to think about what we stitch (or do any craft). I will remember that and I think the joy I find in stitching will now be multiplied.
And the joke not only made me smile, a little chuckle escaped.

Love it, but the animal should have been an owl.
An Australian 'Barking Owl' that sounds as if it's saying the word 'Woof-woof', as here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp12LxWPdkw.
Regards,
Richard

Ha, yes that would be even better! Not sure many people would recognise it though, I wouldn't have before I listened to that video.

Never heard of a barking owl. Amazing.
But I liked the cartoon. It was cool, man.

No one has enough lives left for that possibility!

Re: 2024 The Smile for Today
We go to the zoo quite often. We have a family pass, which gets us and up to 4 children in, unlimited number of visits. This year is the zoo’s 50th anniversary, and they’ve had a lot of special things going on throughout the summer. One day there was a Lego tent. Kids followed schematics to make a small thing, not identifiable as anything. When they handed it in they got a bag with stuff in it. I don’t know what…I had no kids with me.
The small unidentifiable things were then put together to make this picture.

Re: 2024 The Smile for Today
That is brilliant, and what a surprise for the children to see what their little bit became part of!
