Brunel designed one of the brick railway bridges in London (Maidenhead bridge https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maidenhead_Railway_Bridge). The arch was very flat, and many self appointed 'authorities' were convinced it was too flat and was going to collapse. They made such a huge kerfuffle about it that the GWR board stopped Brunel from removing the arch formers once the bridge was complete. The formers were destroyed in a storm the next year, while the bridge is still standing. I think that counts as Brunel pulling a fast one by unconventional means, showing he was right & everyone else wrong.
