Re: Floss Keys/Bobbins
prefer plastic i just got a load of floss from that stash haul but all the paper bobbins are so battered they all need replacing all 230 of them. i find the plastic ones sturdier as well as easier to keep clean

I've always so far just used the cardboard ones that came with my bobbin boxes - it makes sense that the plastic ones would be more hard-wearing but so far I've not had any problems with any of mine (having been storing my threads that way for a year).

I've recently started changing over to the plastic ones, the cardboard ones seem to have got tatty very quickly after doing a few projects and i felt that the plastic ones may last longer

I prefer the plastic ones as they last better, but I did like the little slot for the number on the card ones you linked to -- very neat idea!

Re: Floss Keys/Bobbins
i've actually made my own bobbins, I have been a bit tight on money recently and couldn't justify paying out for bobbins so i made them. I used scrap paper and laminated it, then cut out the bobbins. It took me about 2 hours to make just over 300.
I can write the thread code on them with a pen designed to write on cd's. I have been using these ages and don't appear to be getting tatty

Re: Floss Keys/Bobbins
What a great idea, Kym - very resourceful!
I've only recently started using bobbins - since joining this forum I've got all my sewing out, which had been put away for about a year and before that I had just kept all my threads in their original skeins stuffed into a box. Now I've bought proper storage boxes with the free cardboard bobbins and am using them for the moment. I can see that they will properly get a bit tatty over time, but I may replace them eventually with the plastic ones. I'll see how it goes.

As with all the others I started with paper but as you use them they deteriorate with time. The plastic ones will last much longer, so the cost will even out over time.

i recently bought 500 plastic bobbins from America for $21.94, they only took 4 days to be delivered, with the exchange rate it worked out that it cost me £12.59

Re: Floss Keys/Bobbins
i have mine on the gold concepts long plastic sticks that they started a few years ago and have them in plastic folders and i have them sorted by numbers and only takes a self but all i do is open the note book it's in and there i go. easier then the boxes i thought but i guess it's anyones guess what to use. depends how much space you have to spare. since we both do stitching it didnt matter how much space we used.

What a great idea! I had not thought of laminating them to make them stronger. I will have to give that a try when I need more bobbins. Thank you for sharing this idea.kymbaker wrote:i've actually made my own bobbins, I have been a bit tight on money recently and couldn't justify paying out for bobbins so i made them. I have used the cardboard ones that came with my boxes, but they fell apart quickly so I started using plastic ones and so far so good.

Re: Floss Keys/Bobbins
I use the cardboard ones and am currently trying to replace ones on some threads I bought off someone on ebay months ago, as they are a bit battered.
I like the cardboard though as the bits you catch the thread ends on seem closer to together from the looks of it and would be more of a snug fit, keeping hold of the thread better?

Re: Floss Keys/Bobbins
I have a mix of cardboard and plastic bobbins. As skeins on the cardboard ones are finished I am using plastic bobbins as the cardboard gets very tatty after a while.
Re: Floss Keys/Bobbins
I tend to use plastic whenever possible.
I originally bought only DMC bobbins but more recently bought cheaper ones from Fleabay without any problems
