bert, the fractal bookmark that I'm working on has stitches of a color spread out all over the place. I guess that's from using 78 colors in a 75 x 200 stitch area. I haven't used the parking method. I run the thread underneath other stitches instead of ending the thread because it is easier to do the single stitches and the entire fabric is covered. One thing that I have found that is definitely helpful with a pattern with a lot of color changes is using some kind of needle organizer. Whether it's a scrap piece of fabric with the needles marked with the symbol or something like the pako organizer, it saves times switching out thread all the time. DH took mine when I finished the footprints pattern because he wanted one for the horse pattern he's working on. I ordered one for him, but he took mine before it arrived. I tried doing the fractal one or two nights, but it drove me nuts changing the thread every couple of minutes. It's all a matter of what works best for you. Like the others have said, don't worry about the back as long as it lays nicely when you're done.

Youv'e got a FRACTAL cross stitch?! I ADORE fractals! I used to have a programme on an old PC which ran a fractal 'loop' so you could swatch it transform through lots of changes and back to the beginning again. I must have spent hours just sitting in front of the screen just watching it...

I haven't been able to work on it much since I've started working nights again and DH has been out of town this week so I've been working on his eagle for Christmas. The one I'm doing is actually a free pattern from this website: http://xs-collectibles.com/" target="_blank" target="_blank They have a whole section of fractals. Every month they are putting a portion of one of their patterns on for free. The piece is 75 x 200 stitches. I only found out about this a few months ago when I joined here, but I've been getting the patterns monthly. I used to teach math at the high school level and hope to eventually go back so I thought they would look great in a classroom.

I'm guessing from the responses that parking is the method that most of you use. But does anyone have any alternatives?

I don't use parking as I know that I'll just get the threads tangled up and forget what color is for what symbol. So I just go along as best I can.

well i have been using my needle organiser for a week now and have to say i think i'd be lost with out it now. it certainly makes things quicker. so im flying throuhg tiddlers

CC, I'm debating on a pako needle organiser as my next project has, 31 colours I think, so it sounds like it would be a good buy!

the only problem i have is not enough needles as i keep having to use up colours to free up needles

i love the parking method on big projects on little porjects like cards or tiny pics i do one colour at a time so it's what makes you feel comfy with your stitching i'm sure it will coome out nice.
