Hand Cramp

Post by London_Adam »

Where i am constantly holding my loop with my left hand, i keep getting a slight achey pain in my hand. I was wondering if it was just me, or does anyone have any tips to get rid of this?

Thanks guys xx

It happens to me, too. I bought a new R&R frame not long ago, and hoped it would solve the problem, but it didn't - I try to change the position of my hand often.

I get that too - especially when I'm working with a hand-held frame. Getting a stand for the frame helped that a whole lot! All I can suggest for the cramp when using the hoop is take regular breaks, say every half hour, get your hand moving a bit, then hopefully the blood flow will improve and it won't hurt as much.

I'm sure either a floor stand, or a seat stand could help to some extent

I bought a seat stand and it got rid of that problem instantly.

my lovely OH bought me one of these for our 4yr anniversary (not a wedding one but any excuse for a present  ) was only £10 delivered off ebay, and have only gotten round to using it, as the other projects I had done were too small. My sewing is slow with it atm, but I am noticing i am getting faster slowly with it. and the "click" in my right wrist has disappeared

so to cut a long story short, atm I would recommend it. I have bought the other 2 sized hoops to go with it as well

Yep, if you're really into stitchery, and you've got the space, it is totally worth investing in a floor stand.

I got one earlier this year and it just makes life sooooooo much easier. Both hands are free to stitch and I've got a bendy thing with a clamp at both ends for holding patterns, and a flexible clippy light thing as well.
You won't regret it.

If I get enough time to stitch I do. However being "mommy" I am asked to either do something or asked where something is every 5 seconds or at least it seems like every 5 seconds. When I do get them I try to move my wrist and hand around every so often and anytime I take a break to use to the bathroom or get a drink I make sure I move it alot around during that time. That usually helps.

I wonder why I think you like graffiti...

My floor stand is a great big thing I inherited from my mom, together with the unfinished tapestry on it. I have completed most of the tapestry - not a craft I was familiar with - apart from a few faces (which are in over 1). Have done about 3 faces so far. 4 to go, iirc. Anyway, it doesn't have any of the nifty gadgets yours does! However, I do have a daylight lamp with magnifier, which is very useful when stitching evenweave or linen.

The clamp pattern holding thingy was the best find ever. It just makes reading from the pattern much easier as you can have it at your eye line.

I've also got a pin cushion thing as well. To take the pressure off the arms on my sofa.

Does all the parts of your stand come separately? like do you just buy the frame and then the pattern holder seperately? I would love one of these floor stands, is there anywhere online selling them?

I find my back gets sore after while sewing as I'm hunching over my hoop sewing on my bed at home, or a backless stool at work! My hand doesnt get to bad yet though

I find my typist copy holder works well for holding my pattern. I put it on the table next to my chair and I can see it without bending over etc. Just an idea that might help someone else.

The wooden stand was one piece of kit that I got from Hobbycraft. You can probably get them online - they are about £20.
I got the clamp thingy via a craft shop in Salisbury.
I got the clip on light for Xmas from my wife.
The good thing about the stand is you can adjust it so that the stitchery is nice and close to you, even if you're sitting in a deep sofa.

MrXStitch, your stand looks like my Opus stand. Not expensive, and it does have accessories such as a chart holder. (Not elegant, but it becomes an integral part of the stand, so is very sturdy.) Because it has so many joints, it can be put into lots of different positions, and there's bound to be one that's comfortable for you, irishstitcher.

Its probably a silly question but do all the frames hold most size projects or do they have to be a close match size wise? :?
