But that's because you ARE Mabel.
I really don't understand how anyone can even think to call you anything else!

Mabel Figworthy wrote:Very well, Fljots it is then. It sounds rather Scandinavian to me, but that may just be because it reminds me of fjords :-). Does it have a significance or did you just like the sound?

And I know what you mean about answering to it in real life -- I'm getting worryingly used to being Mabel!
When I first went on-line I tried all sorts of fancy names that appealed to me, but they were all too popular and had to have a number after them. I wanted something more exclusive. I had studied Old Icelandic at University as a minor subject, and so had quite a few of the Sagas in my bookshelf in the bedroom beside the computer. The Fljotsdale Saga caught my eye. So you are right about it's origins. :)

Your progress is lovely I can see the dragon section now as well.

I know what you mean about names I am quite touchy about mine. In the live world (won't call it real as this is real too) I don't let people shorten my name I never have. On this forum though it just seemed so naturel to shorten it to the name my family use for me. Don't worry you will forever be flojts to us now!

Between your TW project and the other one in the SAL, I'm starting to be tempted......

As for being called by your screen name, I don't worry about that. Of course, I'll answer to Barb or Barbra in life, but if my mom and grandma are around, I'll even answer to Debbie--my mom's sister's name is Debbie, and my grandma will call me that all the time.

Great progress! I love those wonderful 'wintery' colours! :applesauce:

I'm happy to be WendyWombat here, even WW BUT call me anything but Wendy in real life and the sharp side of my tongue comes into play!!
I can't bear Wend or Woo or any shortened versions of a name that can't be shortened!

Just me, I guess!

Fabulous stitching, Fljots. It's coming along so well.

Since we're talking about names here, how do you pronounce Fljotsdale? I know I'm hardly ever likely to need to say it out loud but I'm curious.

Slinky

PS Slinky is a nickname given to me by a friend. Only she calls me it, but I quite like it. And apologies to Wendy, Nettie, Spark et al for people just like me. I shorten names all the time and give friends nicknames.

Fortunately neither my name here nor my "real" name are easy to shorten (although if you really wanted to you could try "Mabe", I suppose) -- although I find that some people in England look at the spelling (Ilke) and pronounce it "Ilkee", or they hear what it sounds like and spell it "Ilka". Oh, and one friend insists on addressing me as "Ilke of that ilk", but then he's a bit of an eccentric :-)

I think it's easiest to think of people on here as their user names, especially with the avatar pictures as that helps it stick in your mind more! I don't mind being called Burgundyice at all, only regret that it's not that easy to type! But my real name is Louise.... I don't like it being shortened much, only friends may be allowed to call me Lou... plus the amount of people when asking me for something saying "please Louise" & laughing because it rhymes... at 26 do they really think I've never heard that before??!!

I like Ilke. :D

My dad used to get called John. His name was Frederick. But his surname was Jakeman, so first he became Jake, then Jack, then John. He did TELL people his name, but it made no difference!
Mind you, his mother and his brother wouldn't use their first given names, ever: my gran hated her first two names and insisted on being called Elsie (her third name), and my uncle was William Eric, but refused to answer to anything but Eric.

Dragon's looking really good :)

Is it OK if I just ignore the J (mainly because I can't figure out how to pronounce it) and call you Flots?

(My real name is Carolyn, I don't like it, I'm only called that at work. Otherwise I'm Caz, or KK because I have the Kute Kitty name in a few places. My mother used to sometimes call me Jane, which was her sister's name. One Christmas my brother's girlfriend, Cath, also came home, and names became entirely interchangeable.)

Well Flots is ALMOST the way it's pronounced anyway! But I like that j in there.

The proper Icelandic pronunciation of Fljotsdale is roughly Flee-ods-dalur - and the Icelandic spelling is Fljotsdalr -(not quite because the t is really a ð. I think. It's been a long time since I did Old Icelandic!) but most people mentally say it as Flotsdale.  Apart from Nordic people, that is!
