Repair job on linen

Post by bolshiegirl »

Hi there

I have just sliced through a few threads of my linen fabric while unpicking with embroidery scissors - I know, smack on the hand! - and was wondering whether anyone can suggest a solution? A sewing friend suggested some kind of adhesive to which you can attach a small piece of the same material at the back, then stitch through. Does anyone know what this is called and any tips on how to use it?

Many thanks for any help.

 Oh my gosh that is so sad. I know a while back some one had asked a similar question maybe one of the ladies will remember what the solution was.

I know with aida it's suggested that you can use a small spare piece on the back of the work as a patch and that once it's stitched you can't tell the difference.
Whether it would work on linen as well or not I'm not sure.

What count is your linen? How about using a fine count waste canvas behind the tear?

At least you won't do THAT again will you!

or perhaps iron on some very very thin Vilene (iron-on interfacing), and stitch that bit using a sharp needle rather than a tapestry needle?

Hi, I once repaired a tear on a linen dress of mine with a patch on the back. Here are some pictures. Hope it helps.

I think I remember you showing us this one, Agi -- it's so attractive you'd never guess it was a repair!

Thank you, no, you really can't see it from the front.

That's positively brilliant!

I would have suggested patching with the same material, too.

You could pin the patch in place rather than using adhesive, then once it's stitched take the pins out & it should be ok.
