don't want to hijack this thread but my question on using varigated threads..but you do stitch a full x insted of / then \ right? I did that on a project and didn't like the look..are there certain types of patterns varigated threads just don't work well with?

Anchor does a bright multi coloured thread too - in both pearl and regular stranded cotton.

It's actually called Rainbow 1335 and then there's Harlequin 1375 which is darker but also many colours.

I always cross as I go with these sorts of threads. It also helps to think how you are placing your stitches, as you can see by examining Mabel's "S". Using variegated threads requires some concentration -- at least in my case!

I definitely "plan" my stitches -- if you don't, you can get rather a stripey pattern which can be quite effective but which I personally don't like very much. So I tend to work in "blotches": I guestimate how many crosses I can do with the colour that's currently being used and do a sort of blob in that colour, then as the thread changes to the next colour I do a blob with that and so on. This may show the effect a bit more clearly:

Great way to show the effect, Mabel. And what a lovely rose! Never thought of sitching the background like that around a 'simple' centre design. Very pretty!

EDIT - Just realised this is my 2000th post! :)
