Help with variegated thread

Post by nachosmiley »

Hi all, a friend of mine was asking me today if I knew of a variegated thread that is all the colours of the rainbow, but very bright shades, not pastels.

The only one I have found so far is Rainbows End dragonfloss from Polstitches here - http://www.polstitchesdesigns.co.uk/dragonfloss.htm

I'm no expert on variegated threads so I thought I would ask on here and see if anyone knows of any others.

Thanks.

Ooooooo good question - I immediately thought of this one - Ada's Rainbow (101) by Gloriana - though not sure if it's bright enough!

Good excuse to browse through some threads.......!

I have a really bright primary coloured one by Threadworx
the number for the shade is 01154 called Bradley's Balloons, it has green , red, yellow and purple and blue in it. I am sure there would be others too that would be what you want.
Here is a link to some yummy colours.

I'm currently using her Jelly Fish thread for an Ink Circles design. But, it has hot pink instead of red. Also, the green is a lighter green. But they are definitely bright colors. I was planning on taking my first progress photo tonight to post in the WIP area. :)

Threadworx Bradley's Balloons seems to have all the rainbow colours in vibrant hues. I'm very tempted to get some for myself as it looks so gorgeous!

That is one lovely thread. I love variegated threads and don't have much chance to use them. I'm planning on some for the 80 stitches SAL. I hope they will work.
Do you know what your friend is planning on stitching with it?

Oh wow guys....I have loads to show her now!! All these threads are droolworthy indeed!

See now I personally love working with Gloriana, but I don't think the colours are as vivd as she would like....I found a Carrie's creations thread called "over the rainbow" which I think would be perfect (especially after seeing the brightness of the thread in your WIP Booknerd!!), my only problem with them is the availability in the UK, Polstitches advertise them on their site but there is no link to the individual colours
I have to say though that threadworx one is gloriously vibrant too...I have used threadworx before and I found them really easy to handle...wow tell you what, I'm glad I'm not the one who's deciding which one to get

As for what she is planning to do with it....I don't know!! She wouldn't tell me....yet....don't worry I will work on her and she will tell me eventually...muhahaha!!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions...it's really appreciated

I used Carrie's Creation "Rainbow" (not "Over the Rainbow" -- she has two shades with very similar names) for this S -- the photo is a bit washed out, but it's really bright in real life:

OK,all you enablers . . . Now I NEED (?) some of these lovely threads.

Question: There are so many brands to choose from and I don't have a specific project in mind. I'd just like to have some on hand to try out.

Are specific one best for certain uses? Could I use any of these in place of DMC floss (same texture, thickness, etc.)? Threadworx is calling to me . . . (Thanks, Karen!!!!)

I've just started exploring and using threads other than DMC, so I'm not an expert, but from what I have experienced, most of them are the same thickness as DMC. I know you can get thicker threads from some companies such as Vicky Clayton.

I've used the Vicky Clayton and Carrie's Creations silk, and I love both. Carrie's Creations is a bit softer than Vicky Clayton's. At least compared to Vicky's thicker premium thread.

123stitch.com just added Threadworx threads to their site! I needed some material, so I ordered a couple skeins to see what they are like. :)

Oh Mabel that S is fantastic  !! I love how the colours flow in it! I will have to tell her about that one too now! She got very excited at work today and spent all her lunch break browsing the various sites cooing over all the threads!

Mabel do you know of any stockists of Carrie's threads in the UK atm?

I would start with thinking about the type of designs you like to stitch and the colours that call to you the most! The hand dyed cottons that I have in my collection (Gentle Arts, Weeks Dye Works, Crescent Coloursand Dinky Dyes) are all 6 stranded just like DMC and used in the same way. In my stash you will find a lot of pinks and purples as I love the colours and sub common or garden DMCs in favour of these in certain designs that suit the look of hand dyeds. When I want to stitch smaller motif-based designs I always raid my hand-dyed stash first! GASTs, WDW and CC are more muted in their tones whereas DDs are often much brighter and more variegated IMHO. You may want to find a chart you love that uses them and go from there - that is how I started my collection initially. That's the cottons - but don't get me started on the silks    !

Have fun browsing for threads!

I wish I did :-( -- I got a lot of them from a stockist in the Netherlands but she closed down last year and I haven't found a European replacement yet.
