I finished the 2nd Navajo mini-stocking and I am starting on the 3rd .........when done, I will be able to start on the finishing part. The first design is called, "Chief Blanket". The 2nd design is called, "Old Style Ganado". I have the history of the blanket listed as well. If u want know the history, let me know and I will submit to the group.
"Chief Blanket" -Chief blankets are the earliest established Navajo weaving style. These blankets were woven as wearing apparel and were generally made wider than long as they were designed to accentuate the wearer. Because it was a trade good, this blanket got its name from the chiefs of the Pueblo and Plains Indians who obtained them.
"Old Style Ganado" - Ganado ( Spanish for "herd of cattle") is a small trading center in the southeast part of the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. Its trading post, founded by Juan Lorenzo Hubbell in 1878, is still maintained as a National Historical Site. Hubbell promoted rugs through catalogues and hung painings of rug designs on the walls for the weavers to use as reference. The colors usually are black, gray and white on a red background with a symmetrical design containing crosses and diamonds.
