I see you haven't plucked up the courage to cut around the outside yet
  I am absolutely terrified of cutting round the edges - I just can't see how it's going to hold. Next I'll wash and iron it so that I can put off that moment even longer

Susan, is it a buttonhole stitch edging? If so, rest assured it will hold! I tried it on both the tea tray cloth and that little trial piece, and I could pull the material every which way and it didn't come undone.

It is buttonhole stitch and I keep telling myself it will work ok - but after all this work I'm terrified to try it  I think I'll probably finish the rest of the stitching tonight, so can't put it off much longer!!

If it helps your peace of mind, why not do a small trial square? Use a scrap of fabric, stitch a small square or rectangle of buttonhole stitch, and cut it according to the instructions (I found that removing the thread next to the stitches really helped -- unfortunately I couldn't use it on the gauze but it should work with nay other fabric)
Be bold, be brave :-) -- good luck!
