two 3/4 stitches together

Good evening. In my pattern I have two different stitches in one stitch square. Do I count them as a 3/4 stitch each and if so, how do I handle the long portion of the stitch, you can't have two in one stitch? I'm puzzled because I've never had two 3/4 stitches together in one stitch square. Using Aida.

That is a great tutorial. However, there is another option, depending on the pattern. If the two stitches are in an area where one of them is part of the main motif and the other is the background, you can do only a 1/4 stitch for the one that is not so prominent, this way you will only have one long stitch going across the cross.

Also if there is backstitch separating the two 3/4 stitches I do two 1/4 stitches and let the backstitch act as the separator.

I use 2 threads for most of my work. So when I get to the (2) 3/4 stitches I work a diagonal line for both colors. I've tried the other ways and ended up finding I like both colors having their own line. Surprisingly it doesn't get overly bulky (it might if you were working with more than 2 threads though).

Also, I've found I like to "cheat" on the squares with (2) 3/4 stitches where backstitch will seperate the 2 colors. I do the diagonal lines 1st, and then secure it with the 1/2 cross. This pulls back the diagonal line a little bit so that both diagonal lines clearly appear...when the back stitch goes in, you no longer see the litte dot that happens from putting the 1/2 cross stitch in as the second step of the 3/4 stitch instead of the first step.

Are you sure they are both suppose to be 3/4 stitches or are they just 1/2 stitches. The pattern key should tell you?

Thank you so very much for all the helpful information and that link supplied by Serinde was so useful that I printed it off for future reference. I've never heard of "fractional" stitches before and I've been stitching for over 20 years.

The pattern I have is not user friendly at all, no description of stitches given but now that I've really looked at the chart I think you are correct Rose, it's 2 diagonal half stitches. I really don't like using kits, which this is, but couldn't find the birth announcement I wanted in a chart so had to go with a kit. Ended up purchasing my own aida as the one in the kit was so stiff it would have cut my thread before I had used the length. I also ended up e-mailing the designer to find out what type of floss her key was in and purchased all my own floss.....the mess the floss comes in, in a kit, is so frustrating as not to be considered useful.

for me it depends on the design. In the past I've done one as a 1/4 stitch, and one as a 3/4 usually making a guess as to which one should be more prominent. In my last project I did both as 3/4 stitches and it trned out fine. It wasnt too bulky and I used the smaller part of the stitch to secure it so the two colours didnt overlap too much. I hope thats clear?

Same as me on this one. Saves trying to make the decision as to which colour is supposed to be the most prominent lol.
