Mosaic Tile

Post by koko »

Has anyone worked with mosaic tile art? My mom was looking to get into that (my sister is a knitter and I'm a stitcher, so she wants a craft of her own!) but wasn't sure where to begin. I found a couple of sites to get her started but would love suggestions if anyone here knows of a good beginner pattern / project.

I used to do MiniSteck, which was made by a German manufacturer and uses little tiles of various shapes but all consisting of squares, but I haven't seen it around lately. But several people have been posting what I think is called Pixel Art which uses single squares only (no combined shapes), is that what you were thinking of?

PS just found a German site showing Ministeck, just to give you an idea, here

When i was in high school, I helped make a glass mosaic piece that should still be handing on the wall in the office. Is that the type of thing you mean? It was fun, but very time consuming and painful getting cut by the glass! :p

I think my mom was looking more at the glass tiles, but I will send this to her & see if she is interested!

I think that's exactly what she wants. She used to do a lot of crafts but had stopped for a while because she went back to school to finish her degree and then get her masters. For Christmas, both my sister and I gave a lot of hand-made gifts, and my mom just loved them and said she wanted to get back into crafting so she could give personalized hand-made gifts too :D She tried knitting before and didn't like it, and also stitched for a while but would rather do something that no one else in the family does, so she came up with Mosaic tile art. I tried to see if I could find something like this forum, only for mosaics, so she could talk to experienced crafters and pick up some tips, but I couldn't find anything.
