I am using this unicorn in a birth sampler to my niece. I found the pattern on the internet some ten years ago, but it was then all in blue and had a rainbow, as you can see at the top right. I changed the colors to white/grey with yellow mane and tail.
Today I added the horn and hoofs. I was going to use DMC metallic gold or Kreinik #4 braid for both, but stitching with the braid was like stitching with a piece of wire. Also I wanted a smoother, softer look. Stored close to my metallics I found a box of old handme-down rayon floss. There were two shades of gold, and I picked the darker. For the horn I found some ivory rayon floss, then I used gold filament to backstitch around it and over it.
All that needs to be done is the eye, and then of course the name, date etc. I will save that for tomorrow. I am very pleased with how my unicorn turned out. Also I learned the use of rayon floss, it really was an eye opener!
