Post by mfranklin »

Hi!

I am collecting the 27 yard hanks of #5 DMC Pearl Cotton, and have no idea how to store them.

Any ideas would be great!!!

THANKS!

Is that the twisted skein or the ball? I can never remember

I've seen balls stored in glass baby food containers. I've also seen them in a small box, fit about 6-8 balls. I have mine in their own Floss Away bags (I only have 3 spools and 1 twisted skein for a project I am kitting up)

They are the twisted skeins.

Right now I have 10 colors, and am going to order more from Joann's online while they are on sale.

I am one of those people that if I have some of a collection, I need to have them all! It's a sickness

Right now I'm collecting Madeira and Vikki Clayton silk, and I swear one of those days I WILL have a full set of Waterlilies!

Waterlilies....

*shakes herself and returns to the question*

I cut my #5 hanks into lengths then store them on wooden rings (which I can't get anymore, AARGH) then on bobbin rings. I'll see if I've got a picture somewhere to show what I mean.

Couldn't find a pic so had to take one. This is what it looks like:

Image

When I buy a skein I untwist it, undo the little knot that holds it together, then cut through the skein at that point. I then "tie" them onto small wooden rings -- they are 20mm outer diameter, and unfortunately the only supplier I know no longer does them in light wood, only dark, so I've had to switch to small plastic rings (nasty slippery thing, pah!) until they stock them again -- write on the number with a marker pen (if it's not DMC I add a letter or letters to indicate the brand, e.g. A for Anchor, HE for House of Embroidery) and store them, roughly by colour, on metal bobbin rings.

Some #5 perle I wind on plastic (flat) bobbins, especially if they are hand-dyed and come in smaller skeins, but I prefer this ring method. I keep them all in a box, on top of my balls of #8 (the balls of #12 are kept in a different box). The following photograph is rather out of date -- there is a lot more perle #5 in it now....
